Probably took Mother's name because Mother not married when they were born. Unless the Father was at the Registration and admitted paternity they would be registered that way. |

Erika, they married on the 4th September 1874 both down as single. So looks like they lived together, if so why did the children take the mother's surname. Looks like you found the 15th child Virgina b 1870. Great |

Thank you for what you have found, so Sarah had 2 children before marriage, just out of interest Sarah was classed as single when she married in 1874. As already mentioned 2 could be stillborn (would their deaths/births be registered) |
