ArgyllGran,

I don't know where I got Emily S from, it is Emily Gertrude

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 21 Oct 2018 16:10

But Edward was a general labourer when he died.
Of course he might have been in the Army when he was younger.

Emily's not the only mystery - I can't find any trace of an Edward Ellam or similar of the right age in any census.

You say that Lilian's mother was Emily S........ Ellam.
Earlier you thought the middle name looked like Gertrude. Have you changed your mind about that?

Thanks all. Emily Ellam is very difficult to find. I can't find a marriage for Edward Ellam . as suggested maybe they weren't married. I suppose that they could have overseas after all it is a military town.

Your friend needs to obtain a copy of Lilian's birth cert - available from the GRO site for £6.00

That will give you her mother's name, from which you can look for antecedents

Oh dear .................

This sounds a little like the piece of paper that OH's mother left for us on her immediate ancestors

First, she was born in Wales, so there were Welsh surnames and forenames, and other Welsh words that OH (who knows a little Welsh) didn't understand and I didn't have the proverbial cat's hope about.

Second, some of the surnames and forenames were linked, others were not. Some names were linked with the unknown words, some not. Some words were just jottings down, with ? after them

I tried for years to get to the bottom of this list .......... supposedly her mother's siblings, parents, aunts etc.

Eventually, with help from people on here and other sites, plus a very helpful friend, we came up with an explanation.

Most of the Welsh words we didn't know were place names ......... farms, houses, hamlets, etc.

Removing those, we linked up about half of the names with "real" people that we could find on censuses, etc. Some even lived on farms with names similar to the ones she'd written!

I still have not sorted others out to my satisfaction.

Of course, as is always the case ............... everyone in the family who might have helped was dead by the time I came to doing the research!

ArgyllGran,

I don't know if Lucy and Rosina were related, this person who did the research just wrote Lucy and Rosina on a piece of paper and put Lucy possible grandmother? and that they lived at Artillery st in 1901

Thanks
Gail

You said -

Someone did some research years ago for my friend and has mentioned the name Lucy Allen and Rosina Allen, now in 1911 Lilian was shown as Lilian Allen. The address for Lucy is 7 Artillery St Colchester.

What record showed the Artillery Street address?
Do you know if Rosina and Lucy were sisters of Lilian? Or some other relation?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 16 Sep 2018 14:33

I suspect that she was just calling herself a widow for respectability's sake.

As already pointed out, there's no mms on Lilian's birth record.

I can't see her in 1901, born Muddiford or Marwood, Devon.
Or any other year, for that matter.

Can't see a likely birth in Barnstaple reg distrct either.

But she could have been using any surname in 1901 - maybe using the name of another unmarried partner.
I'm not putting too much faith in her supposed YOB of c1861, either.

In 1911, although crossed out, it says she had had four children, of whom one had died.
