Thanks AG. For some reason I had her born about 1868/9 - no idea why. I'll try again.

Thanks AG, I can't find her birth or baptism anywhere, even with the new birth date. Strange.

Yvonne Report 15 Dec 2018 00:37

Just looked back over the whole of this thread and Austin had posted the 1871 census entry, which states that Henrietta was born in Meath. Maybe this is why we can't find her.

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 15 Dec 2018 09:33

Civil registration for Irish births didn't start until 1864.

James and Margaret married in 1858 so I would assume they had children born before 1864.

Although useful, the ages on census records cannot be taken as accurate. It is possible that Henrietta was born before official registration began.

On the 1871 census Henrietta is recorded as age 9. Later census make her a little younger- It was quite common for women to shave a few years of their age as they got older.
----------------------------

Going by the ages of the other children I think it's likely Henrietta was born before 1864:

Henrietta Brock
Lucy Jane Brock 1864
Anne Isabella Brock 1866
James Irvine Brock 1868
Mary Elizabeth Brock 1871
Sidney Herbert Brock 1871
Margaret Catherine Brock 1873

I think you're right AQ ... I don't know where I got that 1869 date from. If Henrietta was born say 1861 do you think it's likely there was another child before her. It seems a while to go after the marriage before the first child. Maybe one that died??

Yvonne

Yvonne Report 30 Jan 2019 00:42

It's been bugging me why two of the children of James Brock and Margaret Jane Graham were born in Worcestershire and all the others were born in Ireland.
Henrietta in 1861 in Meath
Lucy Jane 1864 in Galway
Anna Isabella 1866 in Irvinestown, Fermanagh
James Irving 1868 in Kildare
Mary Elizabeth 1871 in Eckington, Worcester
Sidney Herbert 1871 in Eckington, Worcester
Margaret Catherine 1873 in Irvinestown, Fermanagh

It bugged me so much that I wondered if they were actually children of James and Margaret Jane, so I sent for their birth certificates. Yes, they are children of James and Margaret Jane and they are twins - Mary Elizabeth born at 4.15 a.m. and Sidney Herbert born at 4.30 a.m. I still don't know why they were born in England and all the others in Ireland, but at least I know they belong.

Just thought I'd share this with you helpful people.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 30 Jan 2019 11:00

I think they moved to Eckington for work reasons ( EDIT: as was already suggested on page 1) , and probably intended staying there.

However, Margaret Jane and James had separated before 1877 when he married Ellen Hanna and was done for bigamy.

I imagine Margaret Jane had moved back to Ireland when they separated, before Margaret Catherine's birth.

ADDED:

In fact, looking back through this thread, I see that you said that on Margaret C's birth cert it says James was living in Liverpool, and Margaret in Irvinestown.

I'm adding to this post because I don't want to have to go through it all again.

I've been looking at James Brock snr., married to Isabella Embleton and their children. The first child I found was Mary Brock and on familysearch the birth was given as 22 Dec 1823 in Kirkoswald, Ayrshire, parents James Brock and Isabella Embleton.
The second child was Ann Isabella and her date of birth was given as 21 Mar 1824.

How can this be?

Perhaps one date is a mistranscription.

As AQ says - best to look at the original.

Bear in mind that these are church records, and so some dates transcribed may be christening dates rather than actual birth dates, even if the transcription says birth date.

Interesting … I splashed out and bought credits on ScotlandsPeople. The entry for Mary Brock says:

Mary daughter to James Brock and Isabella Embleton his wife born at High Belchristen?? 22 Dec 1823.

It turns out that Hanah and Ann Isabella are twins and the entry for them is dated 3 May 1824 and says:

Hanah and Anna Isabella twin daughters to James and Isabella Embleton his wife born at High Belchristen 21 March and certified this day.

This must be the shortest full term pregnancy ever!!!

I honestly don't know where to go from here.

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 6 Feb 2019 08:15

Does it give a date for Mary's Christening? It would be unusual for the date of entry to be the same as the birth date.

As you say, as birth dates they are not possible. I still suspect that it is Mary's entry that is recorded wrongly.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 6 Feb 2019 12:35

It has definitely been written wrongly in the parish record.

It was bugging me, so I had a look myself .

The christening date was 16 March 1823, so the birth must have been Dec 1822 (or even some earlier year - going by all the census records, I would guess 1821).

It's a mistake by whoever wrote the record.

We'll never know her actual DOB for sure.

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 6 Feb 2019 13:01

Good work AG- I suspected as much. More than a year between Mary's christening and Hanah's birth- so not a miracle birth!

Yvonne

Yvonne Report 6 Feb 2019 17:24

I tend to agree with you AQ and AG that it's Mary's entry that is wrongly recorded. I think we can safely assume she was born in 1821 or 1822. Phew, glad it wasn't a miracle birth!

Thanks.
