Thank you all for your responses. When my head stops spinning I will sort through the information you have provided and sort out what I have, in boxes, and put it all into order. Maybe living at the bottom of the earth and being upside down complicates matters.

The info on Gladys returning to the UK is spot on. She and aunt Louie visited my in Kuala Lumpur in 1974, on the way to Australia. Louisa Jane died while my mother was in Wales but was unable to see her because of heavy snow.

I am the second son of Edgar (2 July 1914). I knew David Roy and Arthur Roy of course in Australia. 'Willie' was uncle Bill to us married to Doll Thomas. I can’t immediately recall which family member told me William was William James.

For Erika, I bought death certificates for various William(s) matching some of the info I had years ago, and Probate documents which were duds so I’m reluctant to spend money on those. Anyway yep thank you all again. Maybe next time i'm in the UK possibly next year I’ll have time to do some real research.

I did not mention death certs.

My advice was to get the man's marriage cert. It is VITAL if you wish to trace his antecedents accurately

You can order it online as per info given earlier

As has been shown repeatedly on here, the idea that he had a second forename seems to be very much a mistake on someone's part - possiby the person who compiled the tree on Ancestry, which is far from accurate.

AustinQ gave you the CORRECT death and burial

Whoever told you he was alive in 1939 was wrong.

Thanks Erika,

I have to confess, I made a mistake and said the 1935 death was correct, I have now corrected the information in my posts- his death was 1936, as shown on death registration and burial.

Your father, Edgar, was living with his mother a 6 Tavistock Road (as shown on the electoral registers that I posted- the William that was buried in 1936 also has the address 6 Tavistock Road.

This is the correct death:

Name: William Davies
Death Age: 62
Birth Date: abt 1874
Registration Date: Apr 1936
[May 1936]
[Jun 1936]
Registration Quarter: Apr-May-Jun
Registration district: Surrey Mid eastern
Inferred County: Surrey
Volume: 2a Page: 300

and this is his burial:

Burial Register summary
last name Davies
first names William
Burial date 22 June 1936
Location Sutton Cemetery (Sutton)

William Davies- Gardener- 6 Tavistock Road, Sutton
------------------------------

I will send you the copy of the burial register so that you can see it is correct. I hope this helps

Possibly Edgar...

17 July 1936 - Bucks Herald - Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, England

CYCLING OFFENCES.
"Slane, of Elm Close, Sutton, Surrey, was summoned for riding a pedal cycle without a white light, and Edgar Davis, Tavistock Road, Sutton, was summoned for aiding and abetting. Neither of the defendants was present.
P.C. Dredge said on Monday July 1st he saw the defendants riding on a tandem cycle in the High Street, Great Missenden. It was 10.25 p.m. and there was no light on the machine. Slane explained that the light had only just gone out, and Davis said that Slane had been trying to knock it alight.
The Bench fined each of the defendants 5s.

I must have missed a lot of this. To answer some of the many questions raised: I am descended from Edgar. Just off the top of my head: a cousin told me that William had a second name (James) that’s why I was following a false trail for so long. Also that he died in 1940. That’s what I was always told.

Gladys did die in Australia, she lived with my parents for decades. She travelled to Australia on the same boat as Spike Milligan when she first came out in the 1960s. I went to her funeral in Wollongong. Louisa Jane travelled to Australia by boat in 1973/74 with Gladys, can’t recall exactly. I was stationed in Kuala Lumpur at the time and they stayed we. Arthur Roy also died in Wollongong. David died in Queanbeyan NSW.

I have lost touch with all of what remains of my extended family in the UK over the years. :-(

Do you now accept that William died in 1936?

You haven't commented on the info provided for you..............
