Born 29. May !916 in Barnet, London
On the transcript on GR it states sex unknown! On Ancestry it states that the page is no longer available. Has anyone any ideas of how to find out if the column for name of father contains anything without having to order the original certificate.
Sometime in 1932 he adopted the name Robinson as per transcript of the entry: the original type written entry has been changed by hand.

Doris Joan b 05. April 1921 died sometime in the 2000s. She was married to a NZ Service Man of Danish descent, namely Halvor or Alver Pedersen. Settled in Palmerston North, NZ and had 5 children - 3 boys and two girls. She was always known as Bubs in the family. Alex had 5 sisters and I think she was the eldest. Only one of those is still alive and is in her 80s. Come back if you need anything else.

It's unlikely that the father's name will be on the certificate for Alexandria, but the only way to be sure is to buy it as the image does not appear to be online..

Michael

Michael Report 30 Jun 2019 13:17

All the information posted is correct. Eliza was his mother and Lydia Sharman his grandmother, but I need proof or non proof of who is biological father was - it would appear that there is the possibility that it was not Thomas Henry. Alexandria (named after the famous battle of) was born in 1916 Thomas and Eliza married in 1920 and went on to have 5 girls.

Maddie

Maddie Report 30 Jun 2019 13:33

so was the 1932 a re-registration of his birth or is it a dirrerent person ?

Rambling

Rambling Report 30 Jun 2019 14:24

Just a point re the GR transcript saying gender "unknown", looking at a couple of examples that seems to be the default when the name is not clearly male or female, eg other Alexandrias are also "unknown" gender, as is Leslie.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 30 Jun 2019 14:27

1932 is a re-registration, Maddie.

There's no annotation beside the original entry on the Index as Dew:

Births Sep 1916 (>99%)
Dew Alexandria H Dew Barnet 3a 752

There is also no annotation on the Index image for the 1932 entry:

Births Dec 1932 (>99%)
Robinson Alexandria H Dew Barnet 3a 762

But there's a note on FreeBMD saying,
"The above transcription represents what is in the GRO index but it is referred to by the following entry
Births 1916 Sep: Robinson,Alexandria H,Dear,Barnet,3a,See D32

That refers to this entry, with mms transcribed as Dear:

Births Sep 1916 (>99%)
Robinson Alexandria H Dear Barnet 3a See D32

That entry is not in the typed list n the Index, but has been added by hand, first with
mms Dew, but no volume number.
Then that whole entry has been scored out, and rewritten , this time with the volume number included.
However, the handwritten mms Dew looks very like Dear, and has been transcribed as Dear on FreeBMD.

But yes, you do need to buy the cert to find out the father's name, Michael.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 30 Jun 2019 20:03

However, the certificate may not tell you definitively what you want to know.

A woman who is not married may only add the father's name to the certificate if he gives permission, either by being present at the time of registration or by letter.

So you may find no name at all ......... which is still not proof as to whether Thomas was or was not the father.

Maybe your next step after that might be to find out if Thomas was serving in WW1, and if his record is available to see if he could have been around approximately 9-10 months prior to Alexandria's birth ............ remembering that a mother has 6 weeks in which to register a birth.

The snag here of course is that only about 30% of WW1 records are still in existence for servicemen.

The other hint might be in Alexandria's second name ............. where does Harry come from???

It is an unusual name for a female, so was it a surname from her mother's family, or is it a hint as to the father.

Couldn't see a service record ( on FMP) to help, but maybe someone with Anc' could also look .

Sylvia, Alexandria is male, and is connected to this thread ( which is about his wife's family)

Rambling

Rambling Report 30 Jun 2019 21:58

There's a letter in a service record for Thomas H Robinson, ( who served in Egypt but was home at potentially the right time) dated July 1916 from a Mrs Young regarding her sister who was ill having given birth to a baby boy on the 28th May ( 2 days out) . Address 36 Cromwell rd, new Southgate.

I am wondering if this is Mrs Young? and is she Eliza's sister

Marriages Jun 1911 (>99%)

DEW Jennie M Barnet 3a 715

Young Harry Barnet 3a 715

The reply to the letter was that she would have to apply for a court order before any stoppages of pay could be enforced. This would imply they were not married?
