Hmmm -
the same tree says that the son William was his son with Annie Robertson, and was born 1889 in Glasgow.

And indeed, that Wiliam is on the 1891 and 1901 censuses posted on page 2.

The tree doesn't mention a later son William with Georgina.

Does it seem likely that a married "inspector in cleansing dept" living in Glasgow (per 1901) , and still in Glasgow in 1930, would be a farm labourer fathering a child in Kinneff area in 1913?

I'll try to find him in 1911.

His wife Annie died 1908.

ArgyllGran Report 16 Jul 2019 12:02

That is definitely Robert Bain Stewart's death in 1930 - I've had a look at the death cert;

Robert Bain Stewart, labourer Electricity Department, widower of Annie Robertson.

Home address: 40 Polmadie Road.
Age 66 years.
Parents: John Stewart, farm servant, deceased, and Susan Stewart, ms Bain, deceased.

ArgyllGran Report 16 Jul 2019 11:30

No problem, Ellen - it's been a very interesting search!

The address does seem a compelling argument.

He would have been 51 in 1914, though.

CWGC website doesn't show any deaths for any Robert Stewart of a compatible age, so he must be one of the ones listed without an age at death.

Does Tania have any paperwork re Robert's war service - an army number or similar detail?

EDIT:

Well, maybe not.
Robert Bain Stewart, born 27 Aug 1863, son of John Stewart and Susan Bain, appears to have died in 1930, as per the death record previously posted on page 2.

Copied again here:

STEWART
ROBERT BAIN
66
1930
644/4 381
Dennistoun

A tree on Ancestry says he died 1 March 1930 in Glasgow.
The tree says this is his probate - they show the image of the probate record - though unless they know he lived at this address, the record doesn't identify him with any certainty from our point of view.

Stewart, Robert, labourer, 40 Polmadie Road, Glasgow, died 1 March 1930 at Glasgow, testate. Confirmation Glasgow, 23 April, to Ernest Marshall Love CA, Glasgow, and Dr Gilchrist, 114 Main Street, Gorbals there, Executors.
Will dated 25 February, recorded Glasgow 16 April 1930. Value of estate: £225 19s 11d.

I have been searching for a colleage (Tania) who tells me that Robert Stewart died in WW1 her half uncle William Stewart s/o Robert Stewart received a Pension from the British Army as his next of Kin.
Tania thinks the most likely one is Robert Stewart who lived at Mill of Barrass
Sorry to tell you after all of your hard work

Thank you wonderful people for helping me in this search, I am very grateful to you all
It looks like Robert Falconer was born abt 1883 to John Falconer & Mary Ann Stewart (sometimes known as Robert Stewart)
Robert Stewart married a Rose King 24th August 1915 at Birmingham.
Many thankyou's

ArgyllGran Report 14 Jul 2019 11:56

I'd forgotten you'd posted that 1911, Dea - a satisfying find!

Yes, Ellen, it seems he took his mother's name as an alias.
Went back to Falconer while in the army ( maybe forced to), then probably went back to Stewart when he deserted in 1919.
Was still Stewart in 1939.

Possibly Rose's death?

Rose Stewart
in the England & Wales, Civil Registration Death Index, 1916-2007
Name: Rose Stewart
Death Age: 56
Birth Date: abt 1889

[Dec 1945]
Registration Quarter: Oct-Nov-Dec
Registration district: Birmingham
Inferred County: Warwickshire
Volume: 6d
Page: 502

I don't see a particularly likely death for Robert, but there are lots of deaths of men named Robert Stewart or Robert Falconer, all over the place, of about the right age.

It would be interesting to know what father's name is on his marriage cert in 1915.

Dea

Dea Report 14 Jul 2019 08:25

'Our' man is definitely the one travelling with his boxing pavilion and boarding in Northumberland on 1911 (posted above).

These newspaper articles are of interest:

https://www.genesreunited.co.uk/keepsafe/asset/details/97922841

Mind you, none of this is actually proof that he is the father of William but it does show that he would be a very good fit for the role !!

Ellen

Ellen Report 14 Jul 2019 02:25

So it looks like he took his mothers maiden name Stewart?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 13 Jul 2019 22:55

Hmmm!
Well, I've looked at Robert Falconer in Fetteresso in 1911 - and it doesn't seem to be him.

That one is a law agent, born in Stonehaven.
He's living with his aunt Helen Thomson, 63, widow, private means, born Stonehaven.

Bother!

There are a number of other Robert Falconers in various places in Scotland in 1911, but I'm not looking at them all!

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 13 Jul 2019 22:42

So at some point between 1910 and 1915 he decided to call himself Stewart.
Maybe because of problems with the police?

If that's him in Fetteresso in 1911, he's still Falconer then.

The name change and timing would fit nicely with William's birth cert - though it's still circumstantial.

Possibly his mother still in Kirkcaldy in 1911 - though her age is a couple of years out:

OOOer !! - Just read back through the last page and it seems that this 'may' be the right one after all.

The one already posted as being the son of John + Mary A (nee Stewart) was born in Laurencekirk but actually lived in Kirkcaldy on 1901 which is where the 1911 one says he is from. - He just seems to have lost a couple of years off his age ?

Just to confuse things further, here is a Robert Falconer who was a professional boxer (pugilist) - I don't really think he is the correct one but I will post it for reference, just in case.:

If that's him - forget my earlier idea that he might have stolen the name of Robert Stewart of Blackburn Road - he wasn't in Darwen in 1911, let alone 1901.

Is it possible he told Georgina his name was Stewart , so that he couldn't be traced in the event of an unwanted child???

As he was tried in 1916 for "fraudulent enlistment" - maybe that means he'd joined up as Stewart, and then they'd found out his name was really Falconer ??

Re Robert Stewart, 17602 Cameron Highlanders -
the address he gives on joining in 1915 is 86 Blackburn Road.

He's not there in 1911 - a family called Farnworth are at that address.

I just wondered if Stewart wasn't his real name.
In 1901 there's a Robert Stewart at 69-71 Blackburn Road - not our man, but I wondered if maybe he'd borrowed this Robert's name:

Robert Stewart
in the 1901 England Census
Name: Robert Stewart

That Robert was born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, per 1911 census.

Perhaps "our" Robert actually was Falconer ?
