Ah -
the last line on the stone is

born Decr xxii'nd mdccl[something]
died Novr viii'th mdccclx

Born Dec 22, Can't quite make out the whole year - I wish someone would move that bit of grass.
Died Nov 8th 1860.

If the year of birth was 1853 it would be mdcccliii

The birth year on the stone looks to me like mdcclxxiix - which would be 1778

Chris

That makes absolute sense.

Taking as accurate something on familysearch is always risky. Checking is vital, as has been illustrated here

ArgyllGran Report 21 Jul 2019 20:16

Yes, looking again at the stone, the birth year is 1789.

1789 is mdcclxxxix

So, one year out from the date in Chris's post.

That death in Festiniog just might be her!!

Death in 1860, age 70 = birth year 1790.

Very close, and person reporting her death might not have known her exact age.

ArgyllGran Report 22 Jul 2019 11:05

Tomlin Campbell in the 1881 census posted by safc is not the brother of Isabella Margaret baptised 1826. His father is James, not Colin:

Tomlin Campbell
in the London, England, Church of England Marriages and Banns, 1754-1932
Name: Tomlin Campbell
Gender: Male
Marriage Age: 35

Father: James Campbell <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Spouse: Julia Sarah Betts
Register Type: Parish Register

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 22 Jul 2019 11:22

If Tomlin 1829, with father James, is the one with Christian Armstrong in 1851, and assuming he's the brother of Isabella and Anna, this may perhaps be Isabella's baptism, although the year doesn't quite agree with the 1851 census - ie not Isabella Margaret , father Colin:

Isabella Mary Campbell
in the London, England, Church of England Births and Baptisms, 1813-1917
Name: Isabella Mary Campbell
Gender: Female
Record Type: Baptism
Baptism Date: 29 Mar 1827
Baptism Place: Bryanston Square St Mary, Westminster, England
Father: James Campbell
Mother: Ann Campbell
Register Type: Parish Registers

ArgyllGran, your reply has been key to figuring this all out, as you correctly said 'If the year of birth was 1853 it would be mdcccliii. The birth year on the stone looks to me like mdcclxxiix - which would be 1778' The 'familysearch' entry had completely thrown me and I'd even considered the stone mason might have made a mistake! Thank you for your much valued input.

safc - your reply showing the 1851 census rang all kinds of bells for me! When I saw the surname 'Campbell' I just knew you had found the right Christian! The curate at St. Anne's from 1854 - 1861 (on June 26th 1861, the parish of St. Anne's was created, and with it, the first parish priest was appointed!) was one P. A. Campbell!!! You've not only found the right lady, but you've lead me down a path that has answered the question 'why was Christian staying at St. Anne's Rectory at the time she died?'
Further research (the discovery of a family tree on Ancestry) has shown that P. A. Campbell was Christian's nephew - son of Christian's sister Ann and her husband James Campbell!
Many thanks to everyone who took the time and trouble in helping solve this puzzle - aren't family history enthusiasts wonderful?!

Thank you all!!!! :-D
