good grief you two have been really busy and I thank you for that.

I have been asking family about Canada connection and they have told me that
Margaret Card who was the daughter of William H was married to Robert Moss

Robert Moss had a brother Thomas who emigrated to canda when he was about 22 and married over there but died in Canada in ww1

this family has so much connection to Canada

thank you so much for all your help once again you have been amazing
Im sorry I don't reply straight away but I work ,have a husband with parkinsons and a sister with terminal cancer so when I am researching it is my time.

Thanks once again

Interesting about Tower Chambers, as Albert was on a ship named Charles De Wolf for a while.

Some of the De Wolfs were from NS - maybe just had a n office in Liverpool ?

https://www.historicplaces.ca/en/rep-reg/place-lieu.aspx?id=1545

A Google search brings up quite a lot about various generations of the De Wolf family.

They seem to have been involved in the slave trade at some point.

Would be good if any names from Liverpool were mentioned in Will, but don't get your hopes up!, lol, at least you have tried.

As said earlier in posting, You mentioned visiting a Records office, so would think you could get access to Ancestry from there.

Don't suppose anybody in family today, knows anything relating, Annie Ridgway?...

Tower Street, Liverpool, related to...John Starr De Wolf, a shipbroker for Charles E De Wolf & Company of Tower Buildings, Water Street, Liverpool. (1, Tower Chambers, Newspapers)

If you have a sub to Ancestry, the record for Albert's exams and ship history is here:

Albert Card
in the UK and Ireland, Masters and Mates Certificates, 1850-1927
Name: Albert Card
Estimated Age: 17
Birth Date: 1851
Birth Place: Windsor, Nova Scotia
Issue Date: 12 Nov 1868
Issue Port: Liverpool
Certificate Number: 89004

If you work your way through all the pages (both forwards and backwards from the page Ancestry shows first) you'll find all the info.

In 1868 his Liverpool address was 1 Tower Chambers.

I think his addresses are probably all just lodgings, and no clue re family.

The information about Albert (at least what I have posted) is from Ancestry.

I have no idea why he would take his exams in Liverpool.

There were quite a number of Cards in Liverpool around that time - so maybe some family connection ??
Charles Jeremiah's brother William Henry also took his exams in Liverpool, according to the link posted by Chris.
Link again here for ease:
http://kencarrico.tripod.com/cardsilas.htm

I can't find anything about the ship "Palmas", so have no idea what cargo she carried, nor exactly when she might have been in Liverpool.

Carter

Carter Report 8 Oct 2019 11:49

something I learned today is that William henry's daughter Margaret married Robert moss.

They had 3 children all born in pemberton wigan.

one of them was Colin Moss born 1924 and he was shot down over germany in 1944.

the regiment he was in was the Royal airforce volunteer reserves.

the battalion he was in was 432 (R.C.A.F.) Squadron which is Canadian

although not Canadian its just another connection to Canada

thank you everyone so much for your help. Im sorry I didn't get back to you sooner but I work and I am also a carer.
My tree research when I get time is my escape from it all .

so let me get things straight in my head.

If we are to believe that the date of birth for William h is that one given on the 1939 census then albert would have to have been around somewhere around august 1866.

we have just to accept Williams d.o.b as there is no records and it could be incorrect ??

So Albert was onboard the Palmas in 1866 and did it dock in Liverpool around that time ?

Could I ask where you are finding the information on albert. it is so interesting.

another question if albert is from Canada and the ships are registered in Canada why does he take his exams in Liverpool ?

Also what type of cargo would he ship.?

I cant emphasise how much I appreciate the help I receive.

thank you so much

Linda

ArgyllGran Report 7 Oct 2019 10:50

William H's DOB (per 1939 register) was 24 May 1867 - though that doesn't quite agree with his stated age at death, which isn't necessarily correct, as it depends on what the informant knew.

Assuming the 1939 date is correct, then Albert must have been in Liverpool around August 1866.

Hmmm - you're right about reading carefully, Chris!
Per my post on 4 Oct at 18:44, the ship "Juno" arrived in Liverpool on 9 June 1866, and I had assumed Albert had arrived with it, but on re-reading, it appears he didn't.
He had been discharged with "mutual consent" in St John, New Brunswick, on 10 May 1866.
If that's William's father, he must have quickly returned to Liverpool on some ship or other.

But he's definitely the same Albert who was on the "Palmas" - see later in this post.

The Albert Card who got his master's ticket in Liverpool in 1872 was born 15 Oct 1851 in Windsor, NS.
He is definitely the same one who died in 1873 aged 22, as his paperwork from 1872 mentions service on the "Palmas".

He had previously been in Liverpool (well, North Shields) for his first Mate's exam in May 1870.
Address: 182 Upper Frederick Street.
At that time he had been in service on the "Palmas" from 28/11/1868 to 5/4/1870.

Same address as in 1868, when he was sitting his Second Mate's exams, as per Chris's post above.

In 1868 his list of ships served on is as follows:

Charles De Wolf, 1863 (as Ordinary Seaman)
Responsible, 1864 (ditto)
Survivor (?), 1865 (Boy)
Henry, 1865 (boy)
Juno, 1865 (Boy)
Juno, 1865-66 (OS)
Palmas, May-Oct 1866, OS
Palmas , 24/10/1866 - 14/09/67, AB <<<< crucial time
Palmas, 9/11/1867 - 18/10/1868, (something) Mate

Albert Card (Mariner, Captain) was at home 1871 (Canada Census taken 2nd April) was back in Liverpool 1872 for Master Certificate (newspaper) then Death on voyage 1873.

So must have been in Lancs. previous to Census, if he was the Father of William.

(his Mater/Mate Certificate Application, says born 1851 October 15th. An address, 4, King St. Liverpool. Dated 20th April 1872)

(another, he was in Liverpool, November 1868, for Examination. Address on that, 182, Upper Frederick Street)

If you are going to Archives, Library, Record Office near you, then you should be able to get access to see them, Ancestry. They need reading through carefully with time spent.

If Card was Annie's maiden name, then clearly she's not William Henry's mother.

This is the only Liverpool birth I can find for an Ann Card, but 3 years older than she claims in all the censuses:

CARD, ANN mms WOODWARD
GRO Reference: 1849 J Quarter in LIVERPOOL Volume 20 Page 379

Daughter of Edward Card and Elizabeth Woodward.
She's with her parents in 1851 and 1861.
BUT_
she married William McLachlan in 1868 in Liverpool, and is in all the censuses up to 1911 - so she's not the Ann Card who married Sam Ridgeway.

So maybe Sam's wife is the right person, and had just called herself Card after her liaison with Albert. Young girl seduced by glamorous Canadian sailor ??

I don't see her anywhere before her marriage to Sam.

I suppose he had to settle down to family responsibilities and earn a proper wage!

Perhaps he wasn't a very good comedian anyway.

If this is the same man in 1871, he started out as an iron moulder while still living with his parents - before he went off the rails and onto the stage!

I hadn't even thought of looking at addresses
I was just fixated on names.

So William Henry was known as ' Harry Card' ?
don't make it easy for us do they

(my father in law's name was harry ut on some documents he is William or Bill )

Thank you
