Carter Report 28 Oct 2019 09:22

Morning

I wonder if anyone could help me with finding a birth.

This is the information I have

Charles Dall c1844 England
Mother Alice Sarah Edwards.
" supposed father " William Dall

Alice Edwards married George Coles Levene in Liverpool in 1838

He died in 1845 and Alice married again to William Dall in 1846 in Liverpool

They emmigrated to america around 1850

Alice has two children before 1846

One is Charles who on all documentation is known as Charles Dall born 1843/44 in England

the other is Isaac Dall born 1845 in England.

Isaac is registered as Isaac Coles Levene and later on in life take this name . It is only when he is young that he is known as Isaac Dall

On the USA census Charles is older than Isaac so he should be a Levene but I cant find a birth for him anywhere.

There is a Charles Dall born 1843 in Preston Lancashire but his mothers surname is Whittle

I have all the USA Census after they land and he is known as Charles Dall but this can't be right.

Any help at all would be wonderful

Thanks you
Linda

ps if i dont reply straight away i have to go to work for a couple of hours

I would think it unlikely that Charles’s natural father was Dall, as the later son’s was Levene (allegedly)

Birth may simply not have been registered

Presumably, you have checked on family search for possible baptism?

Checked Lancashire opc , free bmd, ancestry . Fmp ,
I checked liverpool parish records as isaac was born liverpool and Alice got married liverpool

MargaretM Report 28 Oct 2019 11:25

There's a passenger list for William Dall and family arriving New York 8 April 1849 but wife's name is Sarah. Family includes:
William, 33
Sarah, 28
Charles, 6
Isaac, 3 or 5?
Emma, infant

ErikaH Report 28 Oct 2019 11:30

Carter refers to a second forename for Alice, (Sarah) although it isn’t recorded on either of her marriage registrations

how strange
can't see him on any census or a death to rule him out

Carter

Carter Report 28 Oct 2019 14:34

could Charles Dall be a son of William Dall before he married Alice Edwards ?

They were both widowers

making Alice stepmother to Charles Dall

so if I find a Dall /Whittle marriage that might solve it ???

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 28 Oct 2019 14:40

There isn't one before the birth.

Nor afterwards, as far as I can see.

This is NOT it - John Hartley Dall married Dorothy Anne Blackburn, per later censuses.:

Marriages Mar 1849 (>99%)
Billington Thomas Preston 21 449
Blackburn Dorothy Anne Preston 21 449
Bowling James Preston 21 449
Dall John Hartley Preston 21 449 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Earnshaw Henry Preston 21 449
Ellens Frances Preston 21 449
Walbank Elizabeth Preston 21 449
Whittle Mary Ann Preston 21 449 <<<<<<<<<<<<

Nothing on Lancs BMD either.

It doesn't solve the Dall/Whittle problem, though

Carter

Carter Report 28 Oct 2019 16:00

Brilliant. Now it looks like its tying up at last

Ann Whittle married someone called Bates then she became a widow and married William Dall and then she died 1844.

Is that a strong possibility

John Wesley Dall, Father of William Dall, 1846 Marriage reference, would be the Father of above as well, looking at Newspaper reference.

(his occ. Tailor as 1841)

Chris :)

(searching above, using John Wesley Dall as Father, brings up other siblings)
