For our reference - location & date:

Nillie Kate Allen Gibbs
in the London, England, Church of England Marriages and Banns, 1754-1932
Name: Nillie Kate Allen Gibbs
Marriage Age: 19
Record Type: Marriage
Birth Date: abt 1879
Marriage Date: 25 Dec 1898
Marriage Place: St Augustine, Paddington, Westminster, England
Father: John Gibbs, cabman
Spouse: Joseph William Gibbs
Register Type: Parish Register

If you look at the image, there's a note at the side which says,

"These parties did not put in any appearance."
Signed by the officiating minister, Henry L Bleby.

The entry must have been written in the register before the proposed wedding, to be all ready for them to sign afterwards, but then had to be scored through when they didn't turn up.

The officiating minister sounds seriously fed up - he must have hung around waiting for them.

A possible reason for the first proposed marriage not going ahead -

this is Nellie in 1901:

Nellie Rowland
in the 1901 England Census
Name: Nellie Rowland
[User-submitted-comment]
Age: 21
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1880

Civil Parish: Paddington
Ecclesiastical parish: St Peter
County/Island: London
Country: England
Street Address: 91 Chippenham Road
Registration District: Paddington
Sub-registration District: St Mary, Paddington

Household Schedule Number: 341
Household Members:
Name Age
Frederick E Rowland 23
Nellie Rowland 21
Lilian L Rowland 4/12

Also at 91 Chippenham Road (but as a different household) are Nellie's parents John and Emily, with son William 24, and grand-daughter Ivy M, aged 1.

An Ancestry user has added the note, "Nellie is the mother of Ivy M Gibbs, living next door at 340 "
Incidentally, the note's inaccurate, as 340 is just the household number, and not part of the address.

Ivy's birth:

GIBBS, IVY MAY MILDRED mms GIBBS
GRO Reference: 1899 S Quarter in PADDINGTON Volume 01A Page 39

Perhaps the first marriage would have been a shotgun marriage, but then one or other of them backed out of it.
Presumably Joseph William admitted he was the father, as the birth was registered in his name, and not as an illegitimate birth.
