I am returning to this post as I now have the marriage certificate for William James Thompson born Downpatrick Norther Ireland . His Parents are named but his Fathers name is difficult to read. As this was the reason I got the marriage certificate I am wondering where the best place would be to get help in deciphering it. You have all been very patient and helpful with this post. I can read the names of his Wife's Parents and know they are correct as I already knew their names. Any suggestions welcome Thank you Pam

What was his mother's name? I assume that's readable, as you haven't asked for help with it.


If the library staff can't read the father's name, it's probably a hopeless task.
But if you can scan the cert and send it to me as an attachment to a PM I'll be happy to have a look.

The Mothers name is Catherine Ward. The name of the Father looks like Arigh that's what the Australia Library staff thought, ? but not found any reference to this. Even though William James Thompson was born in 1842 in Downpatrick may be his Father was not from Ireland . I have tried lots of searches on all records Thanks Pam

In spite of an apparent dot over the name, suggesting there's an "i" in it, I think the name is Hugh.

However, still no luck in finding William or either of his parents.
