Thanks ArgyllGran, He may have owned it too just be fore he died !

As for the seller - he replied to my message & doesn't know anything on the history of the camera. It is something he got a while back (Didn't say where though !).

So, with many things left by the original owner, the family will get rid of things via charity shops, or via Ebay - which is where I got it from, and so the link to original family is then lost.

At least we have a name - or indeed 2 people with that name, which helps to narrow it down somewhat.

Or Frederick William Austin Finch may have owned it just before he died!

I don't think the seller's location is necessarily any help, as the camera may have passed through the hands of several owners.

Thank you all for te information so far received !

The Ebay seller is from the Luton area of Bedforshire, and the camera in question is a Ensign, Selfix 320 model.

It was made by Ensign / Houghton-Butcher in either 1938 or 1939. Of course world events took over and camera production ceased, only picking up again post war. Not mch info on internet.

Several other Selfix models were made either side of the war.

I have emaild the seller again if they remember anything, just waiting for a reply.

So, with the camera dating to approx 1938/39, I am inclined to think it may have belonged to Frederick William Albert Finch who died 2008, Germany, or at least a family member.

Would this make sense?

You say you bought the camera on eBay…….in which part of the country was the seller?

He/she must know where the camera was bought/found/acquired

I did add the caveat that I might have missed it.

Of course I could blame the filthy cold I’ve got.

Have found parents of both Fredericks above.

Frederick b1912, son of James Cowell H. Finch & Alice Susanna Davenport

Frederick b1915, son of Frederick James & Emily Remington

As I don't have access to Ancestry at the moment, can anyone pleas find them on census' ?

Thanks,

Marcus

Marcus Report 26 Sep 2023 20:10

The name is embossed/pressed into the case, and I presume case & camera go together.

So I assume this 'Finch' was an owner at some point, but not necessarily the original owner.

I bought this camera from EBay. The seller knows nothing, unfortunately....!!

The 2 names Kay found look interesting. Both Frederick - maybe related?

Kay????

Are you looking for the original owner?

Try using freebmd to see if you come up with someone with those initials, then you could try looking in Search/ search all members trees as you would then have the first name.

Possibly born 1915, Holborn
