I have had a closer look at this now, and it basically lists names, each one with a date, where they worked and what job they did. There are also lists of different Railway companies. The cd is in acrobat format and some documents are more than 3000 pages long.

Hi Carol, If you have time I'd appreciate a look up of my Grandfather William James Cottle. He went to work for Great Western Railways in their works at Barry Glamorgan. It would have been 1918 - 1920s some time. If it's a difficult search please don't spend too much time on it. Thanks, Gwynne

Hi Carol, I have an Alfred Mark George Springford who apparently worked on the Railways most of his life. He was born in 1901, so I would imagine it would be around the 1920s onwards. Also his father, (also Alfred) who was born in 1876, appeared to have worked for the Railways from around 1901. They lived in Stratton St Margarets, Swindon area if that helps narrow it down. Any info would be great!!! Sarah

Hi Grovel I am looking for a Charles Wright who was a railwayman in Chester le Street Durham in 1898. The only one I can find on a census that matches him is a Charles Wright who was a railway signalman in Wooden Gate Northumberland in 1881, I think then in Hexham Northumberland in 1891.(born about 1854/55). If I can ever reciprocate please let me know Thanks Ann

Hi Carol, This really is a bit of a long shot but could you possibly look up William Baker born 1861 and working in Bristol for GWR as an engine cleaner around 1882 onwards until he joined the railway wagon works? He was born in America somewhere and I'm looking for any possible leads. Marion

Chris Report 31 Oct 2003 13:07

I would very much appreciate a look up for my grandad Alexander FLETCHER, who worked for the GWR in Birmingham, after the 1st world war right through the 20's 30's and 40's. There is a family story that as a result of being gassed in the war, he was rendered dumb. He looked after the horses for the railway and after several years he suddenly regained the ability to speak and it was supposed to be attributed to being in contact with ammonia from the horses urine! Nice family story. He actually joined the Army under the name of Henry FLETCHER as he had previously been invalided out of the Marines so he may be under the name of Henry dob 10.01.1883 Thanks Chris
