Please can anyone advise on trying to find John H Skaife b Yorkshire 1822, married in Missouri, United States 1849, I have tried to find him on passenger list on GR but I am unable to find anything at all for that name.
Thanks Julie

Flip Report 31 May 2019 21:31

According to the 1850, 1870 & 1880 census I think he was in Oregon with wife Mariette but he was just listed as John, no middle initial. Mariette born Missouri to English parents. The outgoing lists didn't start till much later, but there are a few possibles for John Skaife on ancestry but I don't have the world wide sub.

Someone else should be able to check though.

Rambling Report 31 May 2019 21:32

It's too early for passenger lists.

Tree on FS gives marriage place as Duboque, Iowa, so this could be a mistranscription?

Hi Rose

I though (according to ancestry) they had the NY/Ellis Island passenger & crew lists from 1820 - is that not correct?

I haven't checked FMP as I only have access to that when logged on at work.

Flip Report 31 May 2019 21:54

1880 also from familysearch, but I had assumed you would already had these.

Hi Flip, I only have access to FMP at the moment :-) FS has NY passenger list 1820 to 1891, but not seeing him on there.

Flip Report 31 May 2019 21:57

Hi Rose, didn't realise FS had the NY lists as well as ancestry, like you I've not seen him there either.

Just looked on Anc' and if someone has access they could look at this?

He might not have arrived in New York at that early date ............

immigrants from the UK also went to Boston, Philadelphia, or to Cnaada then across the land border.

Ellis Island records are from 1892 to ca 1930. It's a free site, although you have to register with them to see the records.

Castle Garden is a free site that has records of entries into New York from 1820 - 1892

Family Search (the Mormon site) has a lot of records, including land crossings. You have sign up on a free account.

for the list of collections, which can be VERY useful .......
