Bear with me please as this gets complicated.
Violet Lydia Lucy Amelia Dollar (my grandmother), was born in 1902 in Stockbridge

Her parents on the birth certificate are show as Edgar Dollar and Lucy Dollar(formerly Newman)

Edgar was born in 1849 in Stockbridge

I have found Edgar and Lucy and their children on the 1901 census in Stockbridge and 1891 census in Lambeth. Edgar was single and in a workhouse in 1881

Lucy is shown as Edgar's wife on the census returns but I have never found a marriage

On her death certificate in 1909 she is shown as Lucy Dollar Young aged 47 and her death was recorded by her son Alfred Dollar Young

I have a marriage certificate dated 1906 showing an Edward William Newman (otherwise known as Dollar] marrying a Florence Isaacs

Lucy also had a baby 1879, Edith Florence Newman (born in the workhouse and no father shown)

I have never found a marriage between Dollar and Newman and have tried searching Dollar/Young marriage and Newman/Young marriages but haven't been able to find any

Can anyone suggest where I can go next?

Many thank for taking the time to read this

Dee

Have you got the birth certificate of the son, Alfred Dollar Young? This might give some clues as to where the name Young comes from.

No, must admit I haven't got that, There is an 8 year old Alfred on the 1901 census, but I would have thought he would have been too young to register his Mother's death in 1909?
The only vague possible I have found is an Alfred Newman born Lambeth 1894 but have not sent for the certificate

Maybe you need to work a timeline for Alfred Dollar Young to see when he added the Young.

Thank you Shirley, that was quick.
I guess I am surprised that a 17 year old registered the death

Namelessone, think that is the only way forward. Have a feeling our Lucy may have never actually married and of the fathers of her children. :-(

Kentishmaid

Kentishmaid Report 1 Aug 2021 18:05

Ethel Rose is a strong possibility I think

Registering a death at 17 isn't that surprising. My ancestors were mainly working from 10 or 12 years old by the end of the 1800's and it was legal for boys to marry at 14 at the time of Lucy's death.

ArgyllGran Report 1 Aug 2021 18:32

Lucy's first child (1882) is Newman, the second (1885) is Young, and all the younger ones are Dollar, so it looks as if Lucy was with a Mr Young around 1884, and then moved in with Edgar Dollar by 1887.

As his older sister's name was officially Young, and if he was aware that Lucy and Edgar weren't married, perhaps young Alfred thought his mother was also officially Young - and called himself Young when registering to make it sound more respectable.
All speculation!

You have a point there Kathleen, I am looking at it through modern day eyes.

Thank you everyone for your input, much appreciated.

Violet was my Dad's birth mother so I have no family members to ask questions of, Edgar seems to have been a very colourful character from what I have found out and ended his days as Town Crier in Stockbridge
