I have to be very careful what i use on my skin, especially my face. On a day to day basis i use "simple" moisturiser, after lots of trial and error it seems to be the only one that doesnt bring me out in spots or irratate my skin.

Now and again especially when under a lot of stress i suffer badly with dry skin on my face and neck, at theses times i always use Aqueous cream. I use it to wash with too when it gets really bad. It contains nothing, just a plain and simple rich moisturisure. We discovered it when it was given to my dad after he had radiotherapy.

I too use Aqueous cream and have done for 20 years. I suffer badly from psoriasis and was hospitalised for weeks in 1988. Part of the treatment regime was to use this moisturiser after all of the other gunk had been removed with liquid parrafin, at the end of the day. Consultant said it was pure moisturiser with no added extras such as perfume etc and no fancy packaging.

I believe that the "over the counter" version is not as good any more because perfume has been added but I get mine on prescription and it has remained unchanged.

Skin still feels and looks good on my face but unfortunately it has no effect on the saggy bits around my jawline. Can't have it all I suppose. lol

Yes it's a thumbs up from me for...zinc and castor oil cream, astral or nivea, ponds cream too! Bio oil is good as you say and a little does go a long way...so well worth it! I'm off out tomorrow to buy some trex! At this rate by xmas I'll be waterproof.
Great little thread, and I'll be keeping a look out for more beauty tips in the future!
Pam.

I use Nivea too, mainly on my legs to help keep my surgical stockings up. Dont like putting creams on my face very often but will just put a miniscule dab of Nivea on it now and again. I like the smell of it too.

I use Aqueous cream Harry! It was recommended to me by the hospital when I was having radiotherapy, my skin never cracked or even reddened throughout my treatment and I've carried on using it since. If I'm going on a night out I add a little perfume to it and use it as a body lotion. Bargain!

And as someone said earlier Bio-Oil is great stuff too, although expensive. A little goes a long way so lasts for ages.

My Dad was burned on the face as a baby, he always used Oil of Ulay, after he shaved, which I used to buy for him.

Although in his late 70's people always thought he was about 50.

This topic is not a man's country, but did you see the amazing write up for Aqueous cream BP in the week-end paper.(Mail on Saturday I believe)

Good for everything and cheap - housewives are apparently buying it by the tubful . (Boots).

I have had a large tub for years on prescription for the chemicals in grow- bags which doesn,t sound ladylike but it apparently is a brill all purpose cream- even as a shaving cream.
Contains liquid paraffin and "for use as a skin cleansing agent and as an emollient".."a moisturiser; cleanser; shaving cream; shower gel; chapped lips"
Has a lovely soft feel to it.

Happy days

Well,Well, Trex on your face, and Ponds Cream on your trombone.

Whatever next.?

SallyF

SallyF Report 18 Nov 2008 15:07

Pond's Cold Cream. But not for where you'd expect me to use it.

I use it on my Trombone slide instead of very expensive Valve and Slide Cream and it smells a heck of a lot nicer as well! :D

I always used Astral cream, as a retired Beauty Consultant & Perfumer it is no different from the top dog on the cosmetic shelves .
The only thing I would say is a lotion is better for the older skin as it does not drag on the skin as cream does.
Glad to retire everything got too expensive !!

Nivea Cream I always come back to, and as Athena said, the light type is best for me now.

Always use the Vaseline Lip Therapy, with Aloe Vera, this is very good, and lips are not cracked at all in the cold weather.

I have been trying to get Zinc and Casteroil Cream, for a rash I have, but have not had any luck. Keep getting told to buy this Nappy Cream, which I dont really want.

Talking about Vic Vapour rub, I was told by an old wormen years ago, if you have a bad cold, put it on the soles of your feet as well.(with socks on of course in bed).

I don't really use moisturisers and similar products but don't think I could live without Vosene shampoo.Tried all the fancy ones and the only one that came close was a very expensive Estee Lauder shampoo that I got hold of when I worked in the factory.

I used Nivea for years and years...and here's why...

At the age of 16yrs when I used to work as an evening cashier in a local shop, this older lady used to come in every couple of weeks and buy the smallest sized nivea tub and also return the empty tub that she'd washed out (gosh she must've been one of the first to start recycling!) - I never quite knew what to do with the empty tub so once she was out of view it went into the bin!

Anyway, one day she asked me how old I thought she was - I guessed at about 60-something - she laughed and said she was in her nineties! I was flabbergasted - hardly a wrinkle in sight.

She said "Now I'll tell you my secret girly, it's this stuff - this Nivea. You start using it from now and you'll have lovely skin like me when you're an old girl like me..."

So I did - and it must have worked because although I'm in my forties I've had people think I'm in my late 20s/early 30s!!

Mind you, I guess any moisturiser used daily is going to do your skin a lot of good.

Sadly, I can't use the ordinary Nivea any more because I find it a bit too heavy on my skin - but Nivea Light is good. I tend to look for moisturisers with sun protection in them now, though.

I also use baby lotion to take my make-up off with.

Oh, and olive oil is great for massaging thighs with to help reduce appearance of cellulite - but you need to do it regularly. Cheaper than those expensive creams, though. You can make it smell nice by adding a drop of essential oils to it.
