That nurse knew she ran the risk of being struck off I am sure when she made the decision to take part in the secret filming.

Thia must surely make her sacrifice even more noble.

I hope she achieves the end she wanted.

All power to her.

Purple **^*Sparkly*^** Diamond Report 28 Apr 2009 02:21

I missed the programme well most of it but it is on again late one night this week so will record it then or watch it. I am glad she has been given a job but it won't be as rewarding as she was training other carers and won't have that influence again. I wish her luck tho, she was concerned about how she would manage, now she won't have to worry.
Seems she has written a letter to her family asking them that should she ever end up in hospital unable to speak up for herself, they make sure she is fed and watered and looked after properly, she made a list of things for her children to check out and get put right.
A brave lady, shame there aren't more who will speak up but my own son is getting grief at work for speaking out about bad practice with his company, and is now on a verbal warning but even that they didn't get right as they gave him no opportunity to have a witness present. Another lad was sacked and escorted off the premises, all for refusing to sweep a warehouse when there was a hold up with work, they are archivists with an insurance company, transcribing data to computers, I think that is the term he used. I suppose they would rather pay him and let him go straight away in case he mistranscribed data incorrectly during his notice period.
My lad said they have stopped this month's bonus for everyone and upped the targets yet again so they are almost impossible to reach. He has been looking for a new job for months now, sad to see him so unhappy at work and being ripped off into the bargain.

Deanna Report 17 Apr 2009 11:20

My husband and I looked after my mother at home when she was dying of cancer.
We were lucky to be able to and she was terrified of dying in hospital.
It was the only thing we were able to do for her.
It was a heartbreaking, soul destroying experience for us.
The only difference is that we were there and we had her painkilling drugs on hand, which we could give her WHEN she needed them.... not when someone had the time.

I realise that nurses are VERY over worked.
When I was in hospital recently for 7 weeks, I saw both sides.
Nurses and carers worked 12 hour shifts... then add to that the journey to and from work. Not an easy day for anyone.
BUT... while I was there I saw the most wonderful nurses and carers.... and some who SHOULD be sacked.

My point is.... this was a nurse through to the bone. She cared about her patients, she may even have thought, as I think ALL nurses and cares should, this may be me one day.
She treated her patients accordingly, a wonderful woman in my eyes.

If you disagree.... lets hope you NEVER land up in hospital with a nursing staff who thinks more about their own comfort than yours.

Margaret Haywood should be praised for bringing it to the attention of the authorities.

According to the reports in the news the disciplinary comittee concluded she did not have sufficient authority from the patients to film them.

Rightly or wrongly, that was the reason for her dismissal.

Have just seen it now I say GOOD FOR HER for doing this .BUT what a shame she has been struck off.She was a TOUGH COOKIE and I praise her for doing what she did.People need to know the circumstances that our relatives might be in.

SHE HAD THEIR AUTHORITY TO FILM

InspectorGreenPen

InspectorGreenPen Report 16 Apr 2009 20:29

Yes it is unfair, but as I said earlier she wasn't dismissed for bringing the matter to the atttention of the authorities, or indeed blowing the whistle to the media.

Her "crime" was to secretly film dying patients, without their authority, thereby breaching patient confidentiality.
