Bob,
you are thinking of the ammunition ship from WW2 which was sunk just of Sheernes, its on the Isle of Sheppey in north Kent.

Still there, still dangerous. If you are in Sheerness you pray if you are religious and cross your fingers if you are not !!!

Bob
That's rather worrying considering there's a nuclear power station at Dungeness !
I've not heard of that and I'm not that far away.

Still not sorted anything out, but will sit down Monday after he gets home from work and have a look at some places I hope, it's less than 4 weeks now lol

Is there not a ammunition ship that is sunk off Dungeness?
rumour has it that sooner or later its going to disappear in a big bang, taking much of the shoreline with it?

Well yet another day that he didn't sit down and sort anything out with me, wanted to do it when I was busy doing other things that couldn't be left, and yet had spent all afternoon in the city wandering aimlessly trying to find a shop that sold the deckshoes he likes to wear most of the time. He said he couldn't find the shop he usually gets them from yet he spent quite a while on that street and opposite the shop too when he went into the new shopping mall. Dozy idiot!
Four weeks today we should be on holiday, huh!
If we end up at the original place booked because of his dithering and prevaricating I will be so annoyed and he will rue the day....... I will definitely go on strike so he has to take me out to eat every day lol

Helen, I think I will definitely try to get your way next Spring, it would be nice to see the places when the days are longer and brighter and it all sounds so lovely. I haven't even had a reply about the property in Dungeness and I sent off the email through the letting site, several days ago. Makes you wonder if the people really want to rent the places out, what with the extortionate costs and then not responding. I will arrange a minimeet if I do come along and make sure I pick some time when you folk aren't gadding off anywhere lol

Thanks for all the input, it's been very interesting and has made me want to see the places for myself.

~~to Rose and all.

Jean, you are so wrong, the Romney Marsh is still sheep rearing country. The Romney Marsh breed are world famous, there are still thousands of them in the fields. The marsh grows great potatoes too.

Rose, Rye hasn't changed much, still lovely and quaint.

Liz it's a long time since i was there , but when I lived in kent we went on holiday to Guestling a little village between Hastings and Rye, lovely scenery there , and Rye is a 'special' place, something about it was just 'home'. I can't imagine it has changed that much :))

Jean (Monmouth) Report 21 Aug 2009 19:31

when I was ateenager and still at school, I had a classmate who lived on the Romney Marsh and we used to go'looking' for sheep for the farmers. They tended to get stuck in the dykes and had to be helped out. Dont suppose there are many sheep around there now.

Helen
I have visited the house and garden a few years ago, when it was open during the local Arts festival week.

There are a few pictures if you look on Google and select ...Images.

Hi Bernie, a direct line would be good, lol, but there is still info about his garden on google - I took a look as you had me worried!

Tiny little garden and in such a bleak spot. When my daughter was at school the 6th form art class came to visit it and draw it - couldn't have taken long!

I believe Jarman's partner still lives in the house.

Liz, have a good holiday wherever you go and if you ever come this way a mini-meet would be fun!

Mac, wish I could, we would have a laugh eh? forgotten when you are going but around the air show etc I know, are you buying any more bits for the Red Arrows to bring back for you?

Cross your fingers folks that I win the lottery or euromillions this week and we can all go on holiday to Malta lol Between us Mac and I can show you the sights lol

Lorraine, you are right, it isn't much fun with him and if I had the money I would go on my own like a shot.

If I do get Kent way I will organise a mini meet Gwyn, and Helen, it would be nice eh? Or will definitely call you and meet up, he doesn't mind me doing that I have to say, I have met up with people before to have a break from him. I have read up about the places mentioned and they all sound very interesting, would be nice to see somewhere new.

He has come home every night this week, driving instead of cycling and his knee is no better, he is really tired and hasn't mentioned the holiday. Maybe he took my words to heart last week when I said I wasn't sure I want to go away with him now lol

I have just been looking at some cheap last minute hols abroad, his passport is valid, maybe if I could convince him it would work out cheaper, or the same price and no driving, he might be tempted so I could lay on a warm beach every day and read and snooze, and eat lovely meals every night that I didn't have to cook or wash up after lol

Will keep you posted.

Helen, you would have a job googling Derek Jarman - he died in 1994. Unless you have a direct line to the hereafter that is.

Sorry purple but it doesnt sound like much of a holiday with your OH

I'd tell him to go on his own stay at home and spend the time with your friends.

Hi Liz, I live in that area and I like Dungeness. It was my birthday a couple of weeks ago and this year my 22 yr old son took me to the Pilot - which I haven't been to in years. There are lots of (breezy) walks along the coast. I haven't been to the RSPB reserve but my stepmother tells me it is excellent.

Derek Jarman's house is in Dungeness. (Google him)

It is very bleak. I love Rye and I am quite fond of Dynchurch and Camber, which are more traditional English seaside resorts.

Eiither way there is lots of history on Romney Marsh, a former smugglers' paradise. My friend's children were christened in Snargate church, which has a painting of a ship on a wall inside - a traditional sign that the church was friendly to smugglers!!

Liz
If you do venture this way sometime, please let me know.
I'll keep you company for an hour or so, while your OH does his own thing.
Dungeness is only a bus ride away from me.
