I've never lived where I was born.

Gwyn in Kent

Gwyn in Kent Report 26 Aug 2009 19:14

I was born in Hampshire, but as an adult I've moved many times, including overseas. Now in Kent, where we've been since 1985 hence my sign-in name.
No intention of moving again.

I have a distant family member who will soon be 93 and still lives in the house where he was born. I can trace direct ancestors in that village back to 1770s so far.

No - I was born in London but now live in Kent.
I wouldn't know where to start explaining about the movements my acestors made! Lol.
The most travelled is my great grandfather who was born in Romania, He travelled throughout the Balkans and Europe as a child. He went to Canada and then the US aged 12 before returning to Romania as a young man. After his marriage he went back to Canada and then the US before travelling on to Brazil and Uraguay. He travelled from Montevideo landing in Liverpool. He ravelled into Scotland, Wales and Ireland extensivley before 'settling' in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire where he died in 1945.

Hi All,

I was born in Oxford and moved to Cambridgeshire when I was about 18months old and have stayed there ever since!!

My ancestors are a nightmare , they all turn up in different counties in each census and also not many of them followed the tradition of getting married in the brides parish! makes them a nightmare to research!!

No I don't live where I was born (Herts). We left there when I was 4, and we only lived there because of Dad's job, not because of family roots. Then we moved north, further north, south and south west.
After that, as an adult, I've lived in more places than I can remember, offhand, so when people ask me where I'm from I'm never sure what to say, so I just say the town where I was born.

My Dad's ancestors all wandered into London at various stages and from various parts of the country - Surrey, Huntingdonshire, Cambridgeshire and Ireland - and they stayed living in London until the 1960's, so I guess city life either suited them or they were never rich enough to make the move and get heck out of it!!

Mum's side were Lithuanian immigrants to Scotland.

Don't even ask how my parents met, that's a whole other story involving another part of the world!!!!!!

Who am I and where am I from?
Reminds me of that fantastic book "Behind the Scenes at the Museum" and if you haven't yet read it - go and get it immediately!!!!!

I don't live where I was born . I was born in Waltham Cross ( Hertfordshire ) but grew up in Suffolk ( in a sea-side town ) , moved again at 11 to just over the boarder into Norfolk ( and another sea side town ) where I have been ever since.
Most of my Dads ( on his Dads side ) where proper Londoners but his Mum was Welsh and that is where he was born .
I have discovered ancestors from Kent , Surrey , Sussex , Worcestershire , Warwickshire , Monmouthshire , Essex...................and none what so ever in the area that I live ......lol
My OH on the other hand has all his ancestors going back generations in a 10 mile radius of here..................and isn't the slightest bit interested in it..........................lol

Hi Rose :-)

I live in the same town I was raised in (won't say born because the hospital I was born in is in another district but was the nearest hospital if you get what I mean lol) but I now live in a different county to that which I was born in. Most of my ancestors come from Lancashire, although one is from Ireland and another from Scotland.

Btw not wishing to be picky (but I'm going to be lol) I think you'll find Merseyside wasn't in existence when your ancestors were born/alive.

I live in the same town as the maternity home in which I was born, and it is now my Vet's. Ha Ha. Lived in Scotland as a child, dad was with the navy, then came back to the actual same house we had left to go to Scotland, but this time dad bought it with help from the British Legion. Have lived around this area after getting married, but moving from village to village. After 2nd marriage we went to Oxfordshire, but came back to our home area. Maternal ancestors were from Whittlesey, Cambs, and Paternal from Lincolnshire

Mauatthecoast Report 26 Aug 2009 12:07

I was born in Lancashire (Dad sent there to work on ordnance factory beginning of ww2). Then family moved back to North East.

My Maternal side originate from Ireland & Northumberland, always worked near the sea.

Paternal side from Sussex....or so I'm led to believe,(they were definitely wanderers) lol
My next visit to research will be to Battle where Grandfather was born.

Incidentally any members have info. about that area? would love to know more.

Good thread Rose :O)
