The family was split up and the older children were taken away but that didn't happen until 5 years after the twins died

Her husband was a marine fireman who was away at sea a lot.I don't think she was employed at the prison rumour has it she was very fond of the "pop"

I think at that time, it would be normal for the twins to be breast-fed. Perhaps that's why they went to live with their mother.

Hi all

Just an update twins died 6 days apart both from malnutrition and exhaustion they were 5 months old but were not born in the prison.
Was it usual for woman convicted of a crime to be imprisoned with their babies. The older children were left at home

I doubt whether the prison would have the information. Newspapers is another option but it would mean a long search as you don't know when the crime was committed.

You could try the Liverpool Archives

Liverpool Record Office,

Central Library,
William Brown Street,
Liverpool L3 8EW

Telephone
General enquiries: 0151 233 5817

Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm
Saturday 9am to 5pm
Sunday 12pm to 4pm

I'm sure they could help you. Perhaps there are newspaper reports about your grandmother. If I was you I'd give them a call about your predicament.

Good luck Christine. You must let us know the result of this one.

You could try the Liverpool Records Office. They might have calendars of prisoners, or may be able to tell you where any records might be held.

thats awful sad,
maybe they came over with the potato famine
when was that,

they let um keep the baby cos it easier to feed him maybe

and the others sound like they were left angry over it,
thats so tragic, but good they kept in touch with each other,
do you know what killed your grandparents

Hi Julie Ann

Dads parents both died in 1921 when he was 7 he had 2 older sisters and 1 older brother none of his siblings would ever discuss their parents I am in contact with several cousins who are as equally baffled. It seems they took the family secret to the grave. The three older children were removed from the family and placed into the care of the Church in various homes but my Dad for some reason was left with them until they died. Both parents were born in Galway

It certainly doesn't prove that Mum was in prison but its looking more likely.
