Dear All

Hello

This is one more for the ladies but there is no discrimination on my posts!

Has anyone had problems buying clothes with the usual sizes 10, 12, 14 and 16? Or do you find that the sizes vary in different shops.

I wanted to get a skirt. The size 12 was too small but the size 14 was too large!

Is it me or do clothes manufacturers think everyone is a skinny size 0 or 8?

It seems if you are not the medias pictorial view of a perfect person, then you don't exist!

Best wishes to all
xx

i bought a second pair which im wearing in a size 14 and they loose,
but sooo much comfier,

as for most tops size 12 now makes me find it hard to breathe
i find it so depressing, cos 14 is saggy so i cant be a size 14

I am size 18, but fit tops size 16. Can never find anything so my wardrobe is dated. Most seem to cater for smaller and all the nice styles are for them. I dont like the very low necklines as showing my scars draws too much attention, but a nicely low round neck is apparently frowned upon. My OH has difficulty with leg length as he is 33inch. Most makes go to 31.

Dear Julie Ann

Hello

Yes, I agree!

The tops are made so that the sleeves and the underarm part are so tight, you can't move!

Then when they are washed, they shrink!!

As for jumpers with polo necks, forget 'em!

Best wishes.

Dear Jean from Monmouth

Hello

And that's another thing!

The tops are so low cut that your tonsils hang out!

There is no happy medium

I am really on a rant and rave about this.

Grrrrrr........

Best wishes

Jeans are my nightmare. In M&S I have a waist that matches a size 8, hips that work out as a 12-14 but I can fit into size 10 jeans IF they are the right length. Problem is, being 5ft tall, "short leg" is too short and standard is too long so I have ended up shortening a couple of pairs myself! (But surely that defeats the point of buying a pair of jeans if I have to alter them?)

The other problem I have with jeans is that they either seem to be stretchy or really thin denim - I always thought denim was invented to be hard-wearing, yet I've got holes in some of my jeans!

Mind you, I had a friend at college who must have had the reverse problem - he was well over six foot tall and built like a stick!

I shop mostly in M&S and these days find that even between styles they vary. With an elasticated or stretch waist I can wear a 14 or sometimes I need a 16, without elastic I can't get a 16 done up in some styles but can in others. Nightmare!

I agree that it does vary from shop to shop but it really annoys me when it varies in the same shop.
I'm talking about M&S, I have recently lost weight and have been able to buy M&S size 22 in the classice range-even a size 20 depending on the style but when I bought a couple of tops from the per-uno range in a 22 they were too small, and a jacket as well I could hardly squeeze into so much so that I checked the label twice.

I will be returning the 2 tops I bought next week and will be enquiring as to their sizing policy.

Anyone else found this? Please note still loosing weight and hope to be buying size 16 by this time next year!!!!!!!

Wildgoose Report 8 Sep 2009 20:58

My friend bought several tops from M&S; all the same size but they weren't! There was such a difference in the sizes she complained to the staff. She was advised to write a letter to the company. She did but received no reply.

I like Next tops but they were cut so low this summer I had to wear a vest top underneath; result; one boiling hot lady! Phew.

Ladies socks; there's another gripe. I am a size 7/8 shoe and ladies socks are nearly always too small, especially after a couple of washes.

i too hate too lower top but as im short they always fall too low at front anyway,
i end up either pulling up at top and down at back all time
or sticking husbands tie pin in the front to close the front across
hate having t)*& hanging out

I agree sizes in different shops vary so much. I also find short trousers are too long (5 foot one and a half). Cropped trousers are often full length on me. Sleeves are always too long, so I can't buy any long sleeve knitteds as they are difficult to shorten. It is very limiting what you can buy and put straight on without getting the sewing machine out. Low tops!! It's a case of having your bra down by your waist if you don't want any of it to show!! lol

Kate Report 8 Sep 2009 22:45

You just reminded me, Ann - the three-quarter length dress problem I have. I always like to browse online before I go clothes shopping, (then I know what I'm looking for!) and I've seen a few nice dresses that I wanted to buy but when I've gone into the shop I realise that the mannequin is about five feet eight so what looks like it should be knee-length is ankle length and what should be calf-length is floor length. (Which drowns me!)

It's no fun being tiny sometimes!

My mum being a dressmaker has always said tops that are fitted always come up smaller.I have often wondered why that nice little top is not so little time i have changed it lol Annie

Daughter has the opposite problem with children's clothes!
My grand daughter is a very slim, tall 7 year old.
Children's trousers tend to be on the wide, short side, and they now have the button & elastic that was on my maternity trousers!

Result? My poor grand daughter has twice the amount of material around her waist than she needs!

Purple **^*Sparkly*^** Diamond Report 9 Sep 2009 00:03

As I put on weight and needed to go up in sizes, from my 12-14 size I stayed at for several years, I found that when I bought larger sizes to fit my boobs and belly ( I have become apples shaped) the clothes seemed to be much longer in the sleeve or leg and I am 5' 6" so not really short! Why do manufacturers think because you have put on weight your arms and legs are longer than the average person?

So annoying. Oh and I hate the fashion where trousers etc don't fit to the waist but somewhere between hip and waist, so I always want to pull them up.

Kate Report 9 Sep 2009 00:16

That's interesting, Liz - the trousers-on-the-hips thing drives me mad, but for the opposite reason! I have a couple of pairs of jeans and several lots of trousers that sit on my hips but whenever I wear them I always feel like I've lost half a stone without noticing! (Which is not good because I could really do with being a few pounds heavier as it is!)

I have problems only 5ft size 20=22 short arms and legs jumpers are always to long can get pants 25 to short 27 to long . my daughter has problems with sleeves she is a size 26 they are always to tight also larger size always seam to be for older poeple not younger ones

Huia

Huia Report 9 Sep 2009 08:25

Another thing, manufacturers seem to think that because you are well endowed in the chest that you must have broad shoulders, therefore the sleeves start half way down to the elbows, if you know what I mean.

I once tried on a blouse which should have been the right size for me. I think the body part fitted but the sleeves were so tight I had to ask another customer to peel the blouse off my arms, having struggled for some time trying to take it off myself. I dont know if somebody in the factory used the wrong sleeves. They would have been too tight on Twiggy.

At least when I make my own clothes I cant complain too much about the fit.

Huia.

Michelle Report 9 Sep 2009 10:46

Huia did you see that item on Campbell Live (current event show here in NZ) the other week about requesting the clothing manufacturing of NZ and Aus to use regulated sizing charts and all the manufacturers saying that it just wasn't possible for them to do that.

In the programme they had a reporter trying on clothes in several shops in the Auckland CBD and who would blame her for buying the skirt from the shop where she was a size 12 even though it was a little more expensive than the other shops where she was size 14-16.
