They don't need to get rid of hot matches, they just need to re-program them so they actually match more than just the name OR the year of birth OR the place of birth, or nothing at all, as some of mine have been.

I have found some really good contacts through them though, so in principle, they are a brilliant idea. Just a few tweaks will do.

An ignore button would be good, both in PM and on the boards...half the rows on here wouldn't happen then. Remove the RR button and go back to the old method of sending abuse reports, and remove the ability to delete/edit posts after a certain length of time, say 15 mins like most forums do.

Oh and smileys to convey the emotion behind the post, I think that would help stop a lot of misunderstandings.

Edit: And fixed user names. Once chosen can't be changed without contacting admin.

Muffyxx Report 14 Sep 2009 21:56

I'd like an ignore button too.

And also total control of moderation here so I can start here but eventually take over the world.........

MWA HA HA

........I WAS only half joking about the second bit :0)

Update it into the 21st century including hyper links, ie being able to click on, for instance, http://www.rootschat.com/ would then take one straight to roots chat; proper moderation of the site, removing unnecessary things such as watering plants in the family tree; free membership; emoticons; an ignore button.

Not sure about free membership. Most sites with free membership have loads of advertising to cover costs, and it's not cheap to run a website. Do we really want even more?

No more flash ads though....perhaps static adverts rather than animations and flash.

Something else I would like. When half the active membership complain about a fault on the site, I'd like the staff to accept responsibility for it instead of sending a standard email telling us it's our browser/equipment/memory etc.

In fact, I'd like staff who know what they're doing...and can be bothered to do it.

Not too much to ask is it?

Silly Sausage Report 14 Sep 2009 22:08

give a better package as I think this site for look ups is the most expensive, and out dated, they havent even got my Granddads name correct on the 1901 census...

Helen1959 Report 14 Sep 2009 22:15

I agree with Teresa's comments about the Hot matches, I've had some good one's in the past too.
What I would like to see though is a mark put against a members name if they are not current users of the site, (i.e they haven't added to their tree or posted on one of the boards for say 6/9 months), so that we know they are not currently active members. this would be alot easier for those of us who regularly use the site for research, who sit waiting for replies to messages we've sent.

Joy Report 14 Sep 2009 22:17

Yes, when there is a problem in the site, for the staff to know what each is saying in response; sometimes an answer would request the problem to be reproduced by the complainant, sometimes the reply would apologise for the fault and pass on the report to the technical team, another may say that the technical team is working on it.

Another thing - to see how many have read a thread.

Amanda2003 Report 14 Sep 2009 22:18

I wonder if the new owners will clamp down on people doing look ups for each other ?
It would be a shame if they did as it has always been a shining aspect of GR that folks are kind and take the trouble to help each other.

It would just go " under ground " anyway wouldn't it ( the helping ) I guess .

Helen1959

Helen1959 Report 14 Sep 2009 22:19

yes joy that is a good idea, so that we know how viewers have read a thread.

Same here Hayley............I didn't even realise chat or gen existed for the first few years as I was always loitering on tips and records...........lol

Silly Sausage

Silly Sausage Report 14 Sep 2009 22:25

Chat was differant then and gen scared me to dealth, evertime I clicked on it ww3 was happening...then one night I couldnt tear myself away from one row, it was like watching a foreign flim without sub tittles but after a bit you get the jist of it...

₪ TeresaW elite empress of deleted threads&#

₪ TeresaW elite empress of deleted threads&# Report 14 Sep 2009 22:28

I was the same. I daren't post on Gen because of all the rows going on, and this was back in the 'good old days' LOLOLOL

It quietened down for a bit and I plucked up the courage to post, but it wasn't long before the rowing started again. I didn't get dragged into them until the bit shutdown three years ago.

I hated chat. It wasn't live, you had to keep refreshing your screen, and there were always three or four conversations going on at once, I couldn't keep up with it. Besides, when I did post on the old chat, I got completely ignored. It felt like my face didnt' fit, and that's why I didn't post on new chat for ages and ages.

Amanda2003

Amanda2003 Report 14 Sep 2009 22:28

I used to think that everyone knew each other and or where related to each other...............lol

Took me ages to pluck up the courage to start posting............lol

Gawd knows what new folks think if they stumble into the boards these days !.....................lol

Muffyxx Report 14 Sep 2009 22:31

I remember being totally confused about what on earth LOL was when I first started reading the general board.

Like Hayley......I kept well away from chat in those days.....dunno why though looking back......some of those I was wary of have turned out to be really good mates xx
