Thank you Stevie - got much more to mull over now!
If Nicholas was his dad - then I've done quite a bit of that side of his tree!

I can't thank you enough Rose.

Just come back on here after frantically searching Ancestry and the IGI.....printer is red hot now!!

It is no wonder I have never been able to find them. Annie/Elizabeth/Bessie seems to have "put it about" a bit. lol

Complete new line of research. My Dad would have been mortified, he was very proud of his nautical roots.

So annoyed, I have got to get ready for work now. Everything will have to wait until this evening.

Can't find a death for John Henry Richens yet. It's tough with all the difference spellings. It could be Annie and Henry had to run away to Liverpool because they were both still married.

Annie's in Southampton in 1891. Perhaps that's where she met Henry.

OMG Rose you are an absolute star. I have been looking for these people for years!!!!

Will look into this further. Can not take this in at the moment. So many people have searched for them over the last four years with no luck.

I am waiting for the marriage cert for Henry and Elizabeth Ncholls 1882.... will have to see what info there is on that.

Looks like Albert became Fred (my g grandfather) and Emilie became Amy (sometimes known as Emmie). I have even bought a copy of her Will hoping there was some mention of her parents with no luck.

Many, many thanks.

Births for the children.

Births Jun 1877
Shergold Albert Tom Alderbury 5a 201

RITCHINS Charles Henry Alderbury 5a 203

Births Sep 1881
Richings Emily Highworth 5a 8

Births Mar 1884
Richens William Alderbury 5a 188

It wonder if Albert became Fred? There's no sign of Albert after 1891

I doubt Henry is the real father of any of them.

Hi Maggie,
Each birth cert has its own reference No. So you should be able to obtain a copy of each one.

Regards,
Steve.

Just to confirm Roses' explanation my J No was of the year of amendment.
But this doesn't neccessarily mean year of birth. In my entry, the J No was appended to the bottom of the page of my original entry.

Rose and Stevie,
He was born in 1926, and was (according to him) adopted when he was 14 - in 1940. Having said that - it could have been 1942.(Gran was a great story teller LOL)
This begs the question - why is his apparently original registration written at the bottom of the page, with the same reference.....unless he wasn't registered at birth!! (quite possible knowing my gran!!)

Stevie, do you know if I would be able to get these certificates with the reference?

Stevie

Stevie Report 18 Sep 2009 00:30

Hi Maggie,
These page numbers J42, are corrections or amendments made on the birth cert.
I have one for myself, with a hand written amendment at the bottom of the page. The original birth cert contained an error & was then corrected.

I'll PM you the ancestry link for reference.

Regards,
Steve

Talking of things not talked about - who the h*ll was my dad's father?Definitely not the one who's name I bore (dad was adopted at 14 when gran married).
Possibly the man dad thought it was - then gran muddied the water by telling dad 'Juarez' - was that a surname or Spain?
Dad is registered under his adopted name at the bottom of the page (handwritten) with a reference to particular volume & page - understandable - he was adopted.
When I look him up under gran's maiden name (one presumes the original registration ) - this is also handwritten at the bottom of the page - with the same volume & page reference as his adoptive registration!!!!
These aren't the usual references eg 1a 23, nooo - his reference is 5b J42!!
What does this mean?
Was dad born abroad and registerd late when gran returned to this country - hence the handwritten entry at the bottom of the page? What does J42 mean??
Was dad, perhaps adopted not only when gran married - but also adopted by gran?
