What are members views on Assisting Suicide ?

I am all for it. It should be their choice. I have a mother in law of 94 and she would dearly love to pass away, or so she says. She is in a nursing home here in Australia where the staff are in short supply and the food is certainly not the best. A few months back she was served Tripe, yes the real stuff, and sometime later under her piece of chicken was a chicken's foot. This is dead set the truth.

I realy dont know on this one, I suppose you would have to be in that situation where you would assist or be assisted, and luckly i not in that situation

So my answer at the moment would be no, but you dont know what will happen in the future, then my answer could be yes

I wouldn't like to generalise. Each case has its own story. I am not 'strictly against it'. I do think that the desire to end it all might come from depression, which might be possible to treat, but if enough people are involved and agree that it would be for the best - then, why not?

I totally agree with it.My Mum asked me several times to help her die.

Please God I am never in the position to have an opinion.

It is a difficult thing to actually say for or against, as has been said it depends on each individual case.

I have spent many hours sitting next to a hospital bed, knowing that the person whose hand was holding would never get out of that bed again.

In my late mother in laws case, she was in pain & asking me to help her … all I could do was hold her hand & ask nursing staff for more pain relief for her … she died & because there was not a ‘No resuscitation’ sticker on her notes they brought her back to suffer for another week! … At the end of visiting I would sit in my car & pray for her to be beyond that pain … it would not have been easy for me to have helped her on her way, but it would have saved her from all those hours & weeks of pain.

Who makes the decision that they are of sound mind if they are crazed with pain - or depressed? An independent board of professionals? The family? If the family then who would oversee the decision to make sure they weren't just after the inheritance? I know how hard it is to sit by the side of someone who is dying - I was exhausted and emotional and in no fit state to make any decision and my father was in the depths of dementia and begging us to let him go.

I feel very uncomfortable about the thought of assisted suicide.

Especially the clinic in Swizerland, where they get paid for killing people!

Having said that, I believe that there is a world of difference between what they do at the Swiss clinic, and giving people that are in dreadful pain (AND terminally ill), enough pain killer to make them able to cope ..... even if this does mean that they get an overdose.

I think the Swiss clinic is only able to make money because the need is there and other countries, ours included have no system of help to those who are so at the end of their tether that they really want to die.

However I am sure it is not a blanket yes or no, each case is different and, in the main, those that have made the news going to the Swiss clinic I can understand where they are coming from.

Mum has no quality of life anymore, she wanders about in her own confused and sometimes very frightened bubble thanks to advanced Alzheimers disease.

However much it distresses me to see her like this, I am against assisted suicide................I could never be the one to deliberately end her life.

I love her too much for that.
