Not at all, Elvie.... historians have been able to show that Christ was born around June, not December... if we were really celebrating the birth of Christ, we would have our celebrations then... however, many ancient cultures celebrated... still do in some... rebirth, etc, etc... it was a pagan festival. Around about the Winter Solstice. Early Christians found that this was the easiest way to incorporate their beliefs.... by encouraging those they were converting to change the focus of their celebrations. Hence, Christmas was .... well, born. Lol

I do so hope that I never, ever lose the joy of celebrating and encompassing other beliefs and religions, and never become so dogmatic that I wouldn't celebrate with members of my family during their own religious festivals, we are very much a multi faith family... oh, and by the way... I always worked at Christmas... some of us don't get days off because it's Christmas. The Muslims I worked with took annual leave at Ramadam... and the Hindu and Seikh colleagues and family take annual leave for their various celebrations, especially Diwali.

Elvie.... are you deliberately trying to wind up? It does seem that you might be.... I am extremely happy for you to celebrate whatever festival... or not... that you choose, as long as it harms no-one,... please do me the courtesy of allowing me, and others on this thread, to do the same.

That is what religious tolerance is all about, I think.

Liz....I think you know me better than to think that I am wishing my life away...... far from it.... I am celebrating and thanking God every day for my life... and am looking forward very much to a Christmas that I might not have seen.... and no-one, not one person, is going to take away my delight and joy in looking forward and anticipating that.

Right... I am off to buy the rest of my kitchen cupboards with my sister.... and maybe buy some presents whilst I am out.

Elvie you are awfully aggressive with your replies. You posted your original comment at 2259 on the 6th and, despite all the return comments you didn't come back on until 2300 on the 7th so I think it was fair comment.

However, regarding your comment, many of us on here are Christian and celebrate Christmas for what it is. the birth of Christ. Also, many of us are not Christian and may be from other faiths or no faith at all. Besides the religious aspect of Christmas, it has also come to represent a lovely family celebration, a fun time. I don't know about your God but I am sure mine would want me to have some fun and a good time while also remembering the true meaning. Please don't take the joy out of Christmas for the rest of us, there is little enough of it in the world today. You are welcome to join in our discussion here, but if you want a serious debate on why we celebrate Christmas, I suggest you put up a separate thread and monitor it yourself.
You are not new so you know the way things work, I would be interested to know if you have always gone by the name Elvie as I for one have not seen you with this name on the boards before. That is not a criticism, just a passing comment and a curiosity on my part.

Oh Daff, please, no! Saw some ads on tv this evening for Christmas pressies etc at Tesco, it really is ridiculously soon for thinking about that season, let's have autumn, Halloween and Guy Fawkes first.

Well, Elvie whoever he or she is didn't come back, how strange to make a comment then disappear.

As last couple of years will add 'Wassailing' to my name on 1st December and remove on Twelfth Night. J*

I agree there has been so mucn doom and gloom this year
cant wait to see all the trees in the windows with there twinkley lights all the kids full of excitment waiting for santa to come their little faces when they open their presents
a time for families to get together going to xmas services and always have xmas songs playing all day long

PollyPoppet... I think it might be to do with the fact that there has been so much doom and gloom about, people are looking forward to some sparkle and frivolity.... just a little bit of pleasure doesn't hurt anyone.

Absolutely does, Elvie.... I shall be thanking God for this Christmas, because I so nearly didn't have a last Christmas... and almost didn't have an Easter this year.

Also... one doesn't need to be a Christian to enjoy Christmas...... I have in-laws from other religions and cultures, and they also enjoy it, look forward to it..... and some may even be spending the holiday with me... they love the atmosphere.

Please remember that Christmas was originally a Pagan festival that was hijacked .... it has always had a spiritual meaning even in pre-Christian Celtic days.

Finally.......my looking forward to Christmas, and whether Christianity is involved, has nothing whatever to do with you... if you think I am pagan, hedonoistic, or materialistic, I quite frankly couldn't care less. I will enjoy Christmas my way, with or without your approval.

Now, that is off my chest!
