I lived with my Grandparents, and poor old Grandad had to leave his drink, in the pub at the top of the road, and come and sing me to sleep .
One I can remember was Bye Bye Blackbird.

I remember all those songs from my childhood.
My granddad was a lovely singer and so were my dad, aunts and uncles.
I have fond memories of sitting around the fire (big black range), lights out and all of us singing.
Specialist songs sung by granddad, my youngest aunt who was a beautiful singer, uncle Thomas... a trained singer.... and all the rest of us too many to mention.
My favourites were... Danny boy, I'll take you home again Kathleen, My love is like a red red rose..... Oh I Could go on and on, but i will make myself cry.

My mother used to sing and play the piano.
The little boy that Santa Claus forgot, which had my sister and I howling with tears running down our cheeks and asking her to "sing it again mummy?"
My mother also sang songs which made her cry in memory of her mother whom she had not seen since leaving home... bless her.
'My Yiddisha mama...' and...
'I can see the lights of home' which made us cry, as she also used to cry while singing it, although we did not understand the significance of it at the time.

My son hunted high and low for a copy of Ann Shelton singing "my Yiddisha Mama" for me for Christmas... I put it on and cried. My son threw his arms round me and cried with me!!
Isn't music such a large and important part of our lives and history?

All the happy , happy songs we all remember , we sang on buses and trains, travelling around with the battalion, some quite risque, my dad was a soldier.

I was singing it (well trying to) with my Grand-daughter the other week.
The song was written by John Walter Bratton in 1907, with lyrics added in 1932 by Jimmy Kennedy
Looking at the age of the song ( 1932 ) I bet my Grandmother sang it to my Mum.

When my brothers and I were small children my Father used to sing I'll Take you Home again Kathleen as a lullaby

I learned a lot of those songs at infant school like Soldier soldier, etc

One I remember my Dad singing to me, and he wasn't really a singing man if that makes sense, was You are my Sunshine. I have the feeling I was his pride and joy till my brother was born when I was just two, and then he was the apple of father's eye doing the garden with him etc and I was relegated to the woman's work of helping clean the house and wash up etc.
My only grandparent lived miles away and I only saw her a few times in my life, suppose I spent 3 months with her in total at the most.

I thought the Aunty Mary had a canary up the leg of her drawers was my Dad mocking Catholics

Show me the way to go home we used to sing on coach trips/Sunday school outings etc.
And the quarter masters stores we used to sing on the school bus.

My Grandfather's clock I used to be able to play on the piano (with one hand!!) Mum had all the sheet music to the songs then (50s) and often played that one with Dad singing.

Another one was After the Ball was over.

Old MacDonald was good too, along with Ten Green Bottles

and There was an old lady who swallowed a fly
