Rose, does that say something about Britain or the people who have left? I wonder how many are transient on - contracts etc.,? I guess those who had been naturalised they wouldn't be included in those stats either!

Rambling Report 26 Oct 2009 18:33

Just cruising google Sue lol ...here's an interesting little snippet

"More British live abroad than any other nationality. There are 41 countries with more than 10,000 British living there and another 71 countries with more than 1,000."

Rose, re the stats: of those who emmigrated a large proportion will be the oldies who have gone off to Costa del Pensioners or similar. They will of course still be drawing their pensions and in some cases benefits. If they also maintain a UK postal address they can return to avail themselves of NHS services.

BTW I am talking to someone on another site about BNP, apparently they have targeted that particular area for several years , with leaflets, campaigning etc , re their promises to provide more housing , being tougher on crime, ( they even support Greenpeace ;) and animal rights lol...lighter on the irony you think? ) ....

racially motivated crime has also soared in the same period..... which is of course entirely co-incidental........

Sue

Sue Report 26 Oct 2009 18:11

lol Uggers, subtle again :-))

I am not saying YOU are as thick as the proverbial, in fact I am not saying anyone is thick as the proverbial. That's because I haven't spoken with anyone who supports the BNP and therefore cannot judge.

I was in the midst of anti English feeling nearly 30 years ago and you would be surprised at how many seemingly ordinary, rational people were quite happy to support an extremist party!

You tell me when burning English owned properties became acceptable?.... but it did!

I can only speak from experience.

What I would really like to know ( and google isn't playing much ,) is the numbers who LEFT the UK in the same periods... for eg

"Two million Britons emigrate in 10 years - Telegraph20 May 2008 ... Two million Britons emigrate in 10 years. Two million British citizens have left the UK in a decade, the greatest exodus from this country ..."

"According to the research by ONS last year ( 2007) UK recorded the highest number of emigrants about 400,000 and immigrants of 591,000."

if anyone can find more recent figures would be interested to see :)

TW, I've never known you to say anything racist. I'm not accusing you (or your thread for that matter) of anything. It just happened to trigger a memory of something someone had said on an entirely different site that made me think about previous posts on this and other sites.

Uggers

Uggers Report 26 Oct 2009 18:03

Well if TW said so, then I really have to, Sue:) Does it then appear that I am thick as the proverbial and am unable to do so? What I have said is just because the BNP have tapped in to peoples fears over immigration it doesn't make them a reasonable option to agree with. They are still a racist hate party and anyone who is taken in by them isn't mentally competent to vote.

Uggers our posts crossed.

That's ok, then, and yes I do agree with that, though I still think they only got in to europe because of protest votes. I think those votes came back to bite the voters and serves em right. But people do believe what they hear, thats why the majority vote mainstream parties, the top three anyway, because we (try) to believe their promises LOL

Sue

Sue Report 26 Oct 2009 17:57

AS TW said you have to separate racism from immigration concerns, the two are not joined at the political hip!

I hate to watch a hate crime relayed on TV and there is absolutely NO excuse for that vile behaviour. However, I can look at the question of 'over immigration 'quite coldly and analyse the overt and covert financial costs to the economy without guilt.

Surely that can be debated without arguing?

Edit: Just read Uggers reply....lol

*chilled* you have to look to the recent past and acknowledge that the BNP are NOT the first racist party to gain support and I don't suppose they will be the last. They undoubtedly will start changing their agenda to fall into the more acceptable stream and then let's see what support they garner!

I hope not Cat, because I am the last person you could accuse of racism. I'm thinking other cuts will have to be made, why not this as well? At least until recovery. That's all I was trying to say.

Uggers

Uggers Report 26 Oct 2009 17:54

Chill out Teresa, I'm talking about real life conversations but you are completely missing the point of what I wrote. As I said, as soon as people start seeing a racist party as reasonable because they say what some of the voters want to hear, we're on a dangerous path

ChAoTicintheNewYear

ChAoTicintheNewYear Report 26 Oct 2009 17:51

Well TW I can't (and wouldn't presume) to answer for Uggers but I can categorically state that on my account it wasn't anything you said.

I don't remember anyone actually saying the "I'm not racist but....." on your thread it was just that reading it brought back memories of other threads on here and posts on other sites.

₪ TeresaW elite empress of deleted threads&#

₪ TeresaW elite empress of deleted threads&# Report 26 Oct 2009 17:44

I hope this wasn't in reference to anything I said on my thread, because not once did I come out with 'I'm not racist but....'

Yes I did mention immigration, I also pointed out that this was out of concern for the economy. Of course it has an impact on our economy, and we are behind other EU countries in recovering from the recession. Can we afford to take on as many immigrants as we are? Nothing to do with race, but surely we can raise a point about immigration without being accused of racism?

Sorry Hayley, the football thing was a sideways comment, just about how much money there is in the country. And I do think if the obscene amounts footballers are bought for and get paid were taxed the economy wouldn't have get a boost - I think very high earners should be taxed shed loads more.

Yeah, funny that isn't it, Cat:)

Totally agree, Keith - our health system would be just a tad short:)

ChAoTicintheNewYear

ChAoTicintheNewYear Report 26 Oct 2009 16:17

Hmmm....not entirely sure I should admit to this but one of the things that has been going through my mind since the "Question Time thread" is why do people say "I'm not racist but....." then, 9 times out of 10, proceed to say something that comes across as racist???

remember this one?

Take a pinch of white man
Wrap it up in black skin
Add a touch of blue blood
And a little bitty-bit of red indian boy

Mm, curly latin kinkies
Mixed with yellow Chinkees
If you lump it all together
Well, you've got a recipe for a get-along scene
Oh, what a beautiful dream
If it could only come true
