~~~~~~ back to Rach ~~~~
"Jane Elliot arrived in the UK determined to show that prejudice exists, and that racism is embedded in our society without many of us realising it.
Since the 1960s Jane Elliot has been running ‘demonstrations’ in schools and latterly with adult groups for organisations and communities. These exercises aim to show that, by dint of being categorised based on some personal characteristic such as skin colour, appearance or even (in the demonstrations) eye colour, people can become the victims of serious discrimination, and that this can easily become ‘institutionalised’."
I am recording this, to view later.
I remember hearing about the 'Blue eyes. brown eyes' lesson when I was in school.
Rambling Report 29 Oct 2009 21:25
reminded me a bit of a young lad at college, asking if Jews in pre war Germany were assimilated or did they 'look different' ( ie 'Orthodox) ...watching film proved the former...but he was asked how ( as he stood out himself for his Yorkshire accent and his red hair ) he would feel if the way he looked decided whether he should be 'acceptable' or otherwise ...
RoseoftheShires
RoseoftheShires Report 29 Oct 2009 21:28
Isn't it sad that a child has to ask if they will be "accepted"
Kay????
Kay???? Report 29 Oct 2009 21:44
Rose I can remember back some years ago,,,,a friend of my sister was took home to meet the potential one day hopefully to be in-laws.....
. they spat at her,called her a white !!!!! and ran her out the house,!!
so it can work both ways in few cases......
Certainly can Kay...
I wonder if that's the 'acid test' ? whether you would want your son / daughter to marry into a different race?
Fiona aka Ruby
Fiona aka Ruby Report 29 Oct 2009 22:54
Apparently 3% of children under 16 are mixed 'race' as opposed to 0.5% of adults. So maybe the acid test is more alkaline than it was.
Or maybe we're just becoming a more integrated society?
After all, we're all of the same (human) race
maggiewinchester Report 29 Oct 2009 23:03
I saw this a while back - well some of it - I found it quite upsetting.
Racism is a 'two way' thing - why does everyone think it's only whhites who are racist?
The worst racist I ever knew (I don't know any members of the BNP!) was Sri Lankan - she hated all West Indians. She never knew one - but didn't want to. She believed they were lazy good for nothings who didn't work and 'should all be sent back' - especially the brothers who ran the local garage! (She never understood the irony of what she had said! LOL)
Fiona aka Ruby
Fiona aka Ruby Report 29 Oct 2009 23:08
Well I suppose that, if we're honest, we all favour our family and friends Joy. But it would be a bit worrying if we then favoured them according to their colour'ethnicity.
wonder where I stand with grey/green eyes....
I wouldn't have lasted beyond the first 2 minutes there... I am afraid when she said "sit " without a 'please' I would have walked lol
suzian
suzian Report 29 Oct 2009 23:13
I guess it comes down to the fact that we're all most comfortable with those most like us
Which makes us tribal, I guess. Not a nice thought
JoyBoroAngel Report 29 Oct 2009 23:14
i like that tribal it sounds good
to me its means family orientated
Kay????
Kay???? Report 29 Oct 2009 23:18
I dont know what I expected but found her true to her cause but her methods were deplorable and put things there that wasnt there and made it personal to those taking part when clearly they themselves were not racists.
suzian
suzian Report 29 Oct 2009 23:19
I guess it does, Joy!
And there's nothing wrong with being family-orientated. Where it all goes wrong is assuming that your "family" is somehow superior to others.
