Also, it looks as if Edward (EJ) must have been married before because on the 1881 census he has children aged 19, 13 and 9, and Annie would obviously have been too young to have been their mother. |

Sorry, on the 1881 census I should have said that EJ Cleaves, was BORN in Gillingham, but LIVING in Leyton, Essex. On Free BMD there is also a death of a Annie Cleaves, aged 27, Dec 1879, West Ham district. |

This is probably her death reg (no other viable candidate found); |

This appears to be Edward & Annies marriage; |

The EJ Cleaves in 1881 must be the one. Edward James Cleaves married Annie Thomas |

On the 1881 census there is a EJ Cleaves, Widower, aged 41, living in Gillingham, so maybe his wife had recently died and that's why his youngest son was living with grandparents. |

Of Arthur Thomas Cleaves, born 1875 Gillingham Kent, they are Edward Cleaves and Annie Cleaves nee Thomas. Arthur is with his Grandparents in 1881 census but no sign of his parents, can anyone advise me where to look please? |
