Winter Drawers Ever Near

Winter Drawers Ever Near Report 5 Dec 2009 20:20

I get endless paper adverts through the door everyday but although it goes into the bin to be recycled I have a thought for those people who are doing the posting through my door in all weathers.

Some are young and a lot are older so I don't know if they are doing anything they can to keep food on the table and a roof above their heads. They may have lost their jobs and just trying to earn a crust so I can't grumble (it could be me or mine tomorrow, or you).

On the other hand I do object to the Post Office putting lots of garbage through my door (poor postman who has to lug it around) which seems to be more important than my bank statements etc. because the garbage earns them money and is a priority which gives them the mega bucks before all else.

Disclaimer: No words were injured during the typing of this statement!

What about the mail order firms you may have dealt with that send you catologues every month. No amount of complaining to them does any good.

Lol at Uzzi ( just got back from Asda , with the 'best cough medicine' I hope! ) , Just call me Mrs Fagin ;)

We do recycle as much as we can and luckily here the council is good, also at Asda there is a recycling centre for pretty much everything else .

Two sugars in mine, while you're there....

On the issue of bin bags, we dont' get them either. We have wheelie bins now, mostly two in this area, and as there are a lot of terraced houses with no front gardens and either shared back access or none at all, most of these bins are now cluttering up the kerbs, causing problems for pedestrians, especially down my side of the street. It's a busy road, so cars are parked on the pavements, bins and placed on the pavements and you'd need to be stick-man to get between them.

Not only that, but they are unsightly bright blue for recycling. Why not green, like the glass recycling boxes we also have to use.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm all for recycyling, and love it that it's been made as easy as possible for us all, including those who don't have the transport to lug tons of rubbish down to recycling points, but what a mess!

There, another little gripe LOL

Don't we all Teresa and I wasn't criticising but when I read through, I thought a couple of your contributors were getting a bit over excited:) But then I've woken up about half an hour ago and am very narky myself. Need more tea:)

That's all I do with it Uggers, and it's not the worst thing I have to moan about, but I do like a little gripe now and then LOL.

Uggers

Uggers Report 5 Dec 2009 16:50

It can be irritating but if that's the worst thing we have to moan about, it ain't a bad life is it? Try and think about the poor buggers who are trying to run businesses, especially in the current climate.

Anyone who has the time and inclination to save them up and post them back to one of the terrible firms trying to drum up business, needs to slap themselves. Just put them in the paper recycling and then everyone wins:))

Rose at least we are on the same side but I had to laugh at the picture of you sending son out to "case the joint"
Sorry Mildred No offence meant at all just an amusing thought of Rose !

From the other side, my son took on some leaflet drops for the local chippy, the pay was lousy for the amount of hours he put in....but, it did give hiim some needed cash and
( though he already has it in spades ) the 'work ethic' that so many complain teenagers just don't have these days .

I take your point Mildred, but doubt many take on the job to 'case the joint'...there are much easier ways than walking round in the pouring rain carrying a heavy bag of leaflets :)

All that advertising must pay off ( particularly all those leaflets in papers ) or the companies wouldn't bother.... my son would be pleased if they stopped, it adds a heck of a lot of weight to his paper bag.

UzziAndHerDogs Report 5 Dec 2009 15:41

Mildred I think your thoughts are to the extreme, most people who leaflet drop use regular people ie. local papers, post , or the such like. It is very rare these days that independant people offer to do the job. So are posties now to be vetted incase they want to "case a joint" . I don't think you are alone with these thoughts so maybe everybody should just have a mail box and collect their own mail.

i use the charity bags too as bin bags, we have to put our rubbish in black bags but I use a bag in the kitchen bin that is then put into the Rubbish bag, saves buying two lots, lol
We used to have black Rubbish sacks delivered BUT the Local Council decided to cut costs and not provide rubbish sacks BUT would only collect rubbish in Black bags so everyone has to buy them now!! if you have limited funds then I think its not on .
At least the charity bags save a bit!! I do support our local Age concern Charity shop but take any good clothes no longer wanted to the shop

Now that is my pet hate of the year, junk mail menus and charity bags.

What gets me is that the same menus get delivered every week, or two. Surely the menu doesn't change so quickly in one to two weeks, and do we really need several so quickly to make us buy the food ??

Lets not forget the security aspect of all those deliveries. Anyone can take this thankless task on for a bit of cash. Its the ideal opportunity to see into peoples houses and to assess vulnerable entry points into homes.
In our area there has been an over the average of burglaries since the summer.
No one would suspect a thing regarding a person going door to door, pausing at some houses to take more leaflets out of their bag..

UzziAndHerDogs

UzziAndHerDogs Report 5 Dec 2009 15:01

I do agree that it is a waste ......

BUT leaflet dropping is well known for being good advertising it keeps the name in mind. Many local firms just pay a small amount for each their leaflet/menu/ what to be dropped through the door with the post. Cheaper than taking out an advert in the local newspaper.
If you are struggling to make a living which would you choose ? Advertise or not, cheap or not so cheap.

Charity sacks , once again they buy in bulk get cheap and use volunteers to deliver (or local people) without them they may recieve nothing because many can't be bothered to sort out old clothes and take them. By receiving a sack which is going to be collected some do put things in and therefore the homeless and bereft do get warm clothes in winter.

Edit to say I would rather see paper wasted (which I used to write shopping lists on) than a life because they needed that charity.

the worst are the ones who bring the free papers - they shove 'em in the letter box but leave 'em sticking out - cold draught howls thru the house and every passer-by knows you're out grrrrrrrrrrrr

I used to work in advertising, and I do realise how important it actually is, but to me, this kind of advertising, millions of leaflets through our door, or people knocking on it, feels like an invasion of my privacy.

Isn't there enough advertising? It's on TV, radio, newspapers and magazines, great big boards down the street, shop windows and here on the internet. That's enough of it that I have to look at in my personal time, without all this lot invading my personal space too. It's MY home, MY time...

Morning Teresa.....was talking about this recently to OH and we're thinking of putting a waste paper basket inside of the front door, easy access to recycle bin on the Monday....job done :O)
Really annoying getting 'rubbish' constantly through the letter box, wonder if it does bring business to these firms! it actually puts me off!!
