Purple **^*Sparkly*^** Diamond Report 19 Dec 2009 02:23

Last evening o.h. was late home with car so I walked to the local supermarket 5 mins away, to get lottery tickets and some bits and bobs.

On the way back I was a bit distracted, didn't concentrate where I was walking and crossing the road, stepped on black ice, went up in the air from my heels and landed flat on my back, cracking my head on the ground with a wallop that made me see stars! Shopping bags everywhere, specs went flying and I felt sick! I remember calling out in this little voice, Help me, cos I was in the road and scared of a car coming along and hitting me. Several people came and helped me up, I had to crawl onto my hands and knees to get up cos of my arthritis etc.
One girl lives near here so she offered to walk me home, carried all my bags and another lady had the other arm. I got in and o.h. was home, I had an ostrich egg on my head and felt awful. I sorted myself out and got wads of kitchenroll soaked in icy water from the tap, and kept holding that against the egg till it went down a bit, but was worried as I have a slightly detached retina and was concerned I had done something to make that worse too. I had a cuppa and a painkiller and kept reapplying the iced pad - didn't have any frozen peas. After an hour I decided to ring NHS Direct and they told me to go to the walk in centre which is nearer than the hospital by about 5 miles, we had to wait ages for a taxi - o.h wouldn't drive as he had been up since 5am and was tired - and went there and got checked over, my blood pressure, usually lowish, was skyhigh apparently and the nurse noticed a trembling in my hands when she put the monitor thingy on one finger. What is that for? I do sometimes get the trembles a bit so reassured her it was usual but she asked if I had told my doctor, which I don't think I have, so another thing on the list for next visit. I got a list of dos and don'ts and what to look out for and call ambulance if it happens and came back here, been snoozing on the sofa but will go to bed early for a change and hope I feel a bit better later on. She said put something frozen on when I got back but all I had was some old frozen brussel sprouts which were a bit knobbly and a part bag of frozen green beans lol The beans helped a bit tho and altho there is a graze I didn't cut my head. My neck is sore, she said it would be and I have a bruise on one b*m cheek and clonked one elbow altho the nurse couldn't see anything when she looked at it so probably another bruise to come out tomorrow. I have the arnica ready to put up cheek and elbow. Eyes feel ok but due an eyetest so will book that for asap.
One thing the nurse said was No computer so I had better sign off and rest some more.

I am cross tho as I had so many more cards to write last evening and couldn't do any, was due to go to Argos to pick up some things I had reserved for o.h. and son, and do other shopping and now not sure what I will feel like doing. Botheration or words to that effect. At least I didn't swear when I fell, there wasn't flipping time!

I have cleared some emails but please can you hold off sending stuff for a few days till I can catch up with myself again.

Many thanks, don't worry about me, my head must be pretty hard, might even have knocked some sense in! The nurse said she didn't know if it was fractured as no xray machine but if it is, as long as I have no further problems the hospital wouldn't do anything anyway. That's good to know lol

Take care folks, and pay attention to where you are walking when out and about, the ground is hard!!!

love
Lizxxx

The annoying thing was that o.h. had called into the supermarket on his way home to get something for his meal at work today, so he didn't have to turn out and walk on the snow and ice! We must have passed each other in the store or the carpark as I walked in. Had I seen him I could have had a lift back, or if he had phoned me to say he was going there I would have asked him to collect me first!

Gee Liz, sound like a very hard fall, at least you will be colourful for Christmas with all the bruises.

Hope the lump goes down, go back to the doctors if you do not feel well, please.

I knocked my head on the edge of a cupboard when daughter was staying here, needed to go to the loo, and did not turn a light on, so would not disturb anyone, I had a great lump on my head and I did swear, though I did not wake anyone. The bruising and the lump were spectacular, that was over a month ago and the spot is still sore, also bruised my boob. Then I did it again, a few nights later, but the second time was the eye socket, so another lump and a bruise, eye socket is also still tender. So then I used to turn a light on, and too bad if I woke anyone.

What a lovely young woman as well to see you home, there are still good people around it seems.

Take care and let us know how you are.

Liz - hope you are feeling better - just take things easy,
why do men never think? My hubby would probalby do the same thing, - go to supermarket - and not check to see what we needed - or if i was there - or go in with a list and still forget something important - ie loo roll and wonder why we run out.

Oh. Liz, I am sorry to read about your fall, what a shock for you, its usually the day after when it hurts, so do take care and try and rest ....I am so concerned about going out in this icy weather, just hoping it all goes soon....
it was good of folk to help you, usually there are some good in people I have found, I slipped on a chip someone had thrown down some years a go, and was helped by a big man, a chair was brought out for me to sit on, but I felt the pain for days after, is there anyone who can collect your stuff from A***s?
when you feel up to it let us know how you are getting on....

love Jean xx

WHAT????? Liz you'd think you were in Canada, you aren't supposed to have black ice, I thought we had a monopoly on that!!
For goodness sake dear friend, will you please put yourself first for a change . . . you are irreplaceable you know. Whenever you read this, send K to the chemist (even if he has been up since 5am)and buy a "beanbag" which you leave in the frig/freezer until needed, wonderful for bumps and bruises and stiff neck, and you aren't thawing and re-freezing your veggies!!.
sending you love and very gentle hugs, behave yourself,
Mary

Hi all, well I feel a bit of a fraud in a way, the lump has gone down and head just a bit tender, a few bruises and think I pulled a muscle in my chest as it hurts to pull myself up in bed, that sort of thing. Otherwise seems no ill effects.
Just going to go out for an hour, will drive in carefully to the city centre and pavements will be clear there with all the feet tramping on them and probably gritted too. No snow since, touch wood, and hopefully it won't freeze too badly so will get home with the car and me in one piece!
Will take it steady tho and just do a little bit of shopping and some more cards tonight.
Will certainly tread carefully tho, don't worry and thanks for good wishes.
Maybe stick to the email bit tho to stop things building up and then I will get to clear a few more later perhaps.
Byyeeee

Hi Liz, glad to see you feel better after a rest. Now we really are "one for all and all for one" aren't we, lol. I rang Joyce this morning and she is very concerned for you, she's not feeling too good herself so I gave her a big hug on the phone. Sending you one as well because if you are like me it will be the second day you will feel it.
Got your card this morning, thank you.
