The last proper white christmas by my calculations where England woke to snow on the ground was 1981 ? Is this correct?

The last one I remember was in 1962/63 when I was a very small child.

You may be right though Hayley as practically every Christmas since - oooh - about 1972 has passed in a slightly inebriated state and why would I bother looking out of the window when there's booze to be drunk?

LOL

No - 1978 maybe? Or was that after Christmas? Gave birth to my son at the end of that year and there was a blizzard at the time - but can't remember when it started. (No alcohol that year - just pains and painkillers!)

Jill 2011 (aka Warrior Princess of Cilla!) Report 21 Dec 2009 20:40

Oh come on you two!!

Big school in 1978 Hayley? That would make you about 47? Someone on here said you were much much older than that!

And Stray - if 1981 was the last White Christmas surely you remember that? Don't tell me you're younger than my son! I'm going to feel soooo old!

It's bad enough this year what with Santa not bringing me the staff I asked for - well Rach said he won't - and Rach has not invited me for Christmas dinner so I'm going to have to cook it all myself - and I have to go to work tomorrow - and I haven't polished the posh glasses yet!

I'm going to have a crisis!!!!

Yes of course I'm grumpy. If I called myself Mrs Smiley Happy Person you'd see through that in a flash wouldn't you? LOL

Anyways, Rach says I can come for dinner - when she's de-iced her "drive" - which is two miles long!!!

And Stray you are younger than my son - boo hoo. He'll be 31 in 10 days.

Going down the garden to eat worms - and fill up wine glass on way past fridge!

It certainly snowed a lot in 1981, but I don't think that snow actually fell on Christmas day - not in London anyway. The last 'London' white Christmas was 10 years before in 1971. I had a 'Tressy' doll for Christmas that year, does anyone else remember them?

Well Stray I'm biased but in answer to your questions

yes (at the moment), yes (I'm his mum what can I say?), yes (in the healthy fit type of thing - cannot comment on the other fit type of thing as I'm his mum for heaven's sake) and ermmm, not really, but he is in regular employment ...

Fiona....I had Tressy dolls " Tressy the doll you love to dress "....lol

I got one for Christmas ( can't remember the exact year ) but my brother broke the key bit in her back on boxing day and Mum ended up cutting off the long piece of hair ( so she had a bald spot ) , then she knitted a selection of hats to cover it up...........lol

I'm blowed if I can recall the last year we had a White Christmas......and I bet the snow is gone by Christmas day this year .

Stevie Report 21 Dec 2009 20:54

I've only experienced on white xmas. Not sure which it was, either 1969 or 1970.

Oh Mrs Grumpy, I think you've miscalculated Hayleys' age. I started big school in 1974 & am now 46...........Except when it snows, then I'm 5¾. lol

An increase in the number of swans arriving at a nature reserve in Gloucestershire could be a sign that the county will have a white Christmas.
More than 150 Bewick's swans have flown from Russia to the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (WWT) in Slimbridge.
Julia Newth, from the WWT, said: "We saw a similar pattern in 2004 when we did have a white Christmas. This year we have even more birds arriving."
More swans are expected, with freezing temperatures predicted next week.
Ms Newth continued: "Maybe it's just an old wives' tale, but it certainly seemed an accurate prediction when the last white Christmas occurred in 2004.
"The weather really does play a part in the timing of migration, so perhaps the Bewick's sense the colder weather ahead?"
In 2004, 53 Bewick's swans arrived at Slimbridge during the first 17 days of December. This year the number has increased, with 74 flying in over the past week.

Britain's last official white Christmas was five years ago, with snow in Scotland, the Midlands, north-east and south-west England, and parts of Wales and Northern Ireland.

Increased betting on a white Christmas has led to bookmakers further shortening their odds. A spokesman for William Hill said: "The nationwide gamble on a white Christmas has meant that we have cut the price of snow on Christmas Day for nine days in a row, with London now 2/1 from an original 8/1. Aberdeen is 5/4 to have snow, with Glasgow 13/8."
Ladbrokes announced odds of 11/8 for Glasgow and 5/6 for Aberdeen.
The odds for London yesterday were the shortest price offered with five days to go in more than 30 years. William Hill said it had received an estimated 22,000 bets on a white Christmas.
