How much of what you've been told by family members
Turned out to be true

In my familys case very little

Mick from the Bush Report 24 Jan 2010 22:04

My father always told me of a family story about how his father was "6th in line to the Earl of Buccleugh!"

Complete nonsense of course-

It was the Earl of Ashburnham!

Not completely, but there has been a grain of truth in some.

Great-aunt (unmarried) had twins - true, born in 1915, and died within a month. Our guess is that fiancee was killed in WW1 - she never married.

G-Father 'ran away' to sea aged 14, when his mother died - false but he WAS 14 when his father died, and we think he went to sea later, when his mother did die.

Same G-Father was supposed to be on Titanic but didn't sign up as he didn't like maiden voyages - can't prove unfortunately but he WAS a steward on the big liners, including Olympic (Titanic's sister ship).

Same G-Father's surname wasn't his real surname - he had a Norwegian name - true, but his surname was Prussian/German, not Norwegian!

Dear All

Hello

Dear JoyBoroAngel

I discovered that a lot of my family had gypsy blood.

Sadly, there were a lot of youngsters who died because of now preventable illnesses.

There was lot of poverty and the stories of the workhouse were correct.

So there wasn't much that wasn't true.

No royal connections or money, etc!

Take care all
Very best wishes

I already knew that my Nan had been conceived out of wedlock ( she didn't know that we knew of course.....poor old dear would have had a fit ).
What I have found amusing is that her mother ( my G.Grandmother ) went to great efforts to hide her " shame " , she lied on Nans baptism certificate and the 1911 census..........all to hide those few months that didn't add up..........lol

My Nan on my Dads side always said her family originated from France but I have yet to prove that one .

My dad's mum was the creator of many porkie pies!
1) My dad's dad. I haven't got his birth certificate yet (dad always had a short one) - it's taken me years to even find the correct ref. number. Thanks to Stevie he found FIVE registrations (true one was crossed out). None of them were at the time of birth - they were when he was adopted - aged 16. I have noticed however that dad has his mum's name at the time of birth!

2) Gran said dad's dad was killed during the war, and when she went to get her widow's pension, found out he was already married.
Well, I have a name for this 'husband' - dad knew him when he was young, and even used his surname.
BUT I have been in contact with a lovely lady who knew him - and my gran's family. He was a close friend of the family, so one assumes gran knew he was married. He was also 30 years older than my gran, and never had children, so may have helped gran out, treating my dad as a son.
Oh - he WAS killed in the war!

3) Gran also said dad's dad came from Juarez.

4) Her mother was a Spanish Gypsy - nooo - came from Cornwall

5) Gran said she had women's pilot's licence no. 6 -- Oh yeah!

6)Aparently went rally driving with Dennis healy (the car man not the ex minister)

and so it goes on.....and that's just one relation!! LOL

Just reading some of this(tales). Iam thinking?Could be a interesting book! Lets face it we all love gossip and not only the women! I think all families have twisted the truth at sometime.I know that my father insisted that we are related way back to Bonnie Prince Charles, umm At first I thought wow, until I was told it wasn't possible because he was not into women???I don't know, you just laugh it off.

My g gran on my mum's side called herself Mrs P.
On all the birth certificates of her children (and there are 10), she is Mrs P.
She and g grandad got married a year before my gran married - just before No.11 was born. She put spinsteer (true) he put bachelor (porkie)!
They took so long to get married as they waited until his first wife died!!
Apparently she was in an asylum. I have found her name - but no asylum connection yet!

Jill 2011 (aka Warrior Princess of Cilla!) Report 25 Jan 2010 00:03

I think it depends on who was doing the telling.

Mum was a truthful woman and a reliable narrator. There was a slip of one generation in one of her stories and even she did not believe the one about the Irish Lord (who turned out to be a silk weaver from Bolton) but I've proved the rest.

Stories from others in the family - not so sure ... I tend to treat them very warily.
