Postie has just put me Gas bill through the door. It is dated 16th Jan, and was for £262.42. I am sure the next one will be equally as big, but I'm not sitting cold for anything.

Our was on 24/7 for about 4 weeks. so no doubt we will have a whopping big bill too.
The pipes would have frozen if it hadnt been on.
Our slabs out the back looked like ther had been an earthquake due to frost.

Annina, I look at it like this. We don't have holidays, because of the allotment, we do not go out drinking, though we sometimes have one in, we never seem to go out for meals these days, because of me bowel probs.,we have no expensive hobbies or interest, unless you count GR.and I make all my own knitteds. I also make loads od food to go in the freezer, (to use with the veggies off the allotment), and I always take advantage of any offers at M*****sons. When you get older, you need your heat.

PS. I am fully appreciative that other peoples circumstances alter cases

We have a gas card meter and during the really cold snap I put on £50 in 14 days because it was that cold, I also have a gas cooker so some of the usage was for cooking as well.

I changed to a card meter for gas and electric last year
I find its worked really well, and no nasty surprise bills to come
Ive had them on as much as I need to and paid as I use
I know this method wouldnt suit everyone
but I find pay as you use great for us

Jean Report 25 Jan 2010 14:03

mine was for £314.00 this time, it was £287.00 this time last year, so Ive only used about £20.00 more, my heating was on constant over xmas.

Stray, Muffy, I am like you two. When my son is not home no heat for me. I am sitting as I type fully dressed with my big fluffy dressing gown on!

Do you pre-payment meter holders know that you pay a much higher rate for your fuel than us who pay by DD.

I know that you prefer this method of paying,as you are more in control of your cash, butwouldn't you be better putting your bill cash in a separate account than paying through the nose.

StrayKitten

StrayKitten Report 25 Jan 2010 14:20

i used to be on pre pay meters, and found i was paying more, so now im on a card, i pay so much a week then i no my bills wont be do high wen they come in, i no DD, would be cheaper also but i just cannot afford to put it on as a monthly sum, so find weekly works better for me xxx

That post registered before I had finished.

Ladies who only have the heating on when grandkids visit, do your offspring know that?? Mine would go berserk if they thought I was going cold.

Like Julia,I am very frugal in my needs, don't go out,or drink, don't care about fancy clothes or hairstyles, and cook most meals from scratch. But,like I said,I spent enough years in a cold house where the frost was on the INSIDE in the mornings.

No way am I going cold in my dotage. I would rather give up fags.

Yes I know we do,but I dint want to do DD anymore as it never worked out right.Still got a nasty bill.
I became fed up with banks and how they operate,so dont use them at all now, only to have my wages paid in as I have no choce in that matter.
I got rid of most of my cards too
I have gone back to good old fashioned cash,if ive got it I spend,if not I wait till I have
Find a pay and go phone better for me too

StrayKitten

StrayKitten Report 25 Jan 2010 14:31

mine isnt my grandchild its my son, i just dont see the point of wasting heating when i can still be warm, by just putting a cardi on and a paif of slipper socks, so i dont go cold, i just dnt spend money to be warm, unless my son is home, xxx

Julia Report 25 Jan 2010 14:33

Oooh Nina, that's abit hot for for my blood on this very cold and murky afternoon in Derbyshire where it is only three degrees. Give up the fags. Never, never. I'd rather cut down on something else if I had to. LOLOL
