Silly Sausage Report 3 Feb 2010 22:34

heard today on the radio that councils are hoping to employ people to help with the gathering of information forms for the 2011 census the last census I remember being included on was the 1981 I can say I haven't filled out a form since (even then I was at school and Mum did it, I thought it was just done automaticly. Is it a from filling excerise?

It is indeed . I can remember filling in the last one ( 2001 ) but oddly enough I can't remember doing any before that........lol

My brother , in the past , has delivered / collected the forms ( that was a bit of a revelation to me when he mentioned it ) .

You're a daft old bat Hayley. Honestly!

I remember the 2001 and vaguely remember the 1991 - although I'd just lost my mum and it was a bit of a blur ...

The 2001 was umpteen pages long and asked all sorts of questions around things like education "Do you have a degree?" etc.

Aren't they threatening to ask questions about your sexual orientation on the 2011? (Not yours personally of course but everyones!)

A few people have suggested photocopying the census records before you hand it back in.....it saves people waiting or paying out in 100 years time lol

I was running a team that did the 1981 census, that included coding all the replies, punching and verifying the cards and working really long hours to input hundreds of thousands of enrties.

Never again!

Amanda2003 Report 3 Feb 2010 22:42

Mrs Grumpy......if they do ask the sexual orientation question I think I'll answer " Hermaphrodite "...............yes , I'll be Ms . Hermaphrodite on the form ......lol

I am really concerned about this now seriously, as I think I will be missing from the 1991 and 2001 census.....

Amanda2003

Amanda2003 Report 3 Feb 2010 22:45

Perhaps " Itsmytelly " filled them in ? ......and didn't mention it ?

MrDaff Report 3 Feb 2010 22:49

How odd.... I was thinking of that earlier today..... I can't remember filling in the census in 2001, and it turns out I didn't, lol... hubby did, cos I was in work, doing a double shift with sleep over. I was a deputy then, so the Manager filled it in I think... now isn't that strange?

I can remember the 1991, but not the 1981... we lived in Cyprus for that, but as forces, we must have filled it in, unless we were staying at my parents... we were home for part of March that year... would that have been it?

I am worried now in case I haven't been entered... I don't want to be a nonentity, lolol!!

Daff, we were in Cyprus in 1981 and Germany in 1991 and didn't fill out a census form either times. Now that will be interesting for the replies in the future. Lol

There arose a few new religions on the 2001 census. People got angry at the question and made up a religion as a protest. The forms are so long now it will take more than a night to fill them in.

Some of you have created problems for your descendants they will be searching for you on various census and wonder why you can't be found. better make notes on your tree re why you are missing LOL

This 100 year rule means we will never see ourselves on a census.

Whirley Report 4 Feb 2010 08:17

Muffy, we too gave our religion as "Jedi Knights" as alot of people did that year and it was noted, i believe officially as being a religion. I remember when in hospital, 2 ladies from the Catholic church came to visit me (long story) asking did I want them to say a prayer for me (I was quite poorly). I explained to them that I was actually a Jedi Knight and not a Catholic so no, I didnt want a prayer thank you. "Of course you are dear" said one of them patting my hand and nodding. She obviously thought I was a raving nutter, which I am of course.

Daff and Brumie Helen - in your circumstances, would the forms not have been filled out for you?

What I mean is........one of my rellies was in Bermuda for the 1911.
On the census image I can see his details on an Officers form, along with hundreds of other blokes, but not in their own handwriting, some admin bod has filled out the whole form.

His wife and children are on another form "accompanying wives and children" or some such title, and they're listed with hundreds of others, and the form has been filled out by another jobsworth, ie not their own handwriting.

MrDaff Report 4 Feb 2010 14:49

You might be right there, Karen...... Also, we didn't actually leave for Cyprus until March, and we spent a few weeks at my parents before we went...... we had just left Germany... so in fact, we could flipping well be recorded anywhere, lolol... better put that on my notes for future researchers, lolol

Helen, I am sure we have discussed this before... we were ESBA, and lived in Dhekelia... if you knew that area, then you would have seen me pootling around, lol I was quite noticeable... one of the few Brit wives with a moped! Oh and we lived in a very distinct spot, so you would know that, if not me!

Born in 1962 I remember filling in the 1981 and putting 'stripper' as occupation. I was an ox tongue stripper - meat processing.
What will the grandchildren think......... I shudder.
Began nurse training the year after and still doing it. In fact at the time I thought if i can do this then I can nurse.
Good idea to photocopy the 2011 and put it in the memory box.

i worked on the census 30 years ago delivering and collecting the forms. Every form had to be collected and correctly completed no matter how many visits it took. We were paid well, (so much per returned form), and if you were allocated a decent area the job was OK. However it was a nightmare if you were given a bad area and I dread to think what it will be like for anyone doing it next year in some of our deprived areas.

Helen1959 Report 4 Feb 2010 15:59

Hi Daff,
Yes we have discussed this before lol, if you rememeber we lived up the other end in Limasol. I shall have to ask hubby when he comes home as to whether he had to inform anyone with regard to where we were. We only came up to your neck of the woods once, that was to go to Nissi Beach, it was a cold windy day when we came and there was hardly a person in sight.
