Different people have different perspectives.

I wouldn't have the slightest bit of fear in walking anywhere in Newcastle late at night. I did it for 32 years and it never bothered me one tiny little bit. Crime has plumetted in Newcastle since I first walked round there.

I grant you that there are some areas where it would not be wise, but that goes for every single city in the world. Even the USA, where they gas, shoot, inject and otherwise carry out various other inventive state sponsored murders. Plus 999 years sentences for felonies. Is there a lesson there somewhere?

If we want to live in a relatively free society we have to accept that there is a cost. If you want a crime free life, move to Saudi Arabia. What a delight that must be.

I doubt whether Brady has been comfortable George, I shouldn't think he is the man everyone wants to be friends with.

I don't know how may of you have visited anyone in prison, I have, and would not want any of it's "comforts" The loss of your freedom is something I couldn't even bear to think of losing, and whilst there are some who say they like it, imagine what lives they must of had on the outside to think inside is better.

A lot is said in prison is said to look "big" to other inmates, yet talk to most inmates one to one, you will get a different story.

As much as its not liked what happens to prisoners today its how the system is.

a murderer suffers for the term of their sentance, what ever it may be ----------- for a victim its for life.!

I live in Newcastle and in the Northeast there is virtually a murder every week. Last week it was in Middlesbrough, the week before it was in South Shields and before that Newcastle. I am afraid to walk the streets late at night in case I am attacked. My friends and I always book taxis to return home safely. The people who commit these crimes are generally lowlife and when caught are sent to prison where they have access to facilities that some people can only dream of. In my opinion this cannot be right and I for one would like to see some form of deterrent even if it upsets some people.

hes stil alive and been released back to prison but is hopful mondays tribunal he will get his wish to be transfered to Scotland to serve the last of his time in a jail there and die,,,,!!!!

Its very simplistic to suggest that harsh punishment is a deterrent to offenders. It isn't. Not now, not ever. That may be counter intuitive but it is a fact, not negotiable.

Crime is falling, or at worst is static, contrary to popular belief. What prevents crime is social conditions, not hanging, flogging, transportation or life in prison.

I, for one, do not want to be part of any society that treats prisoners as they were in victorian times. We have moved on

The problem with that thought process is that law biding people totally agree with what you say but unfortunately people who commit most crime don't feel that way in fact they see their time in prison as an occupational hazard and accept prison life as the norm and so have no fear of getting sent to prison so it's no deterrent at all for the majority of criminals

Although their was a time when i would have agreed with the death penalty i believe it would reduce the amount of innocent people being murdered,

I do think that it is wrong to take any life in that way,

We have a dilemma because we are damned if we do and damned if we don't but one thing is clear,

What we have by way of crime and the punishment handed out is not working,

I am not in favour of hard labour as was the case years ago but i do think that a start point could be to make prisoners work hard to provide for them selves whilst in prison and also to help compensate their victims after all i have had to work to support my self as do other law biding people so "why should prisoners get this for free" this could also help in the rehabilitation process

If people want to punish and rehabilitation then things will have to change

I think the use of "Scalpoline" on Brady and Hindly would probably have made them reveal where the children were. but thats against their Inhuman rights or the Law at that time,personally I think it should have been used and sod the consequences.

Yes, prisoners have TVs, books, pool tables, courses, workshops etc....oh, I forgot, 3 meals a day. Would you really want to forego your freedom for that? I know that I would deem being locked up 24 hours a day with no freedom and little privacy the ultimate punishment.

Yes, I do believe in punishing criminals, and I also believe we should try to re-educate and re-habilitate where possible. But we don't have to resort to archaic methods of hard labour and capital punishment. If that makes me a bleeding heart, so be it.

This is the first thread I have ever added to this site and I have had my eyes opened to the reaction of people who have added their comments. Some I agree with and others I haven't but basically it's a matter of opinion.
I don't think for one moment that Brady will survive his latest health scare and I say good riddance to this vile creature.
I have lived through the periods when all the crimes which have been mentioned happened and personally I believe that capital punishment was deserved at the time. Unfortunately there were miscarriages of justice particularly in the case of Derek Bentley and Timothy Evans and my heart goes out their families. They should never have been hanged.
I think that hard labour in prisons was abolished in 1948 so people being sent to prison today must have an easier life while inside and the tendency is for them to commit crimes again when they are released so please tell me where is the punishment.

Brady and the likes are names that are remembered so well,is that every so often during their prison time their names have made the headlines for one reason or other,

turning to god,
hunger strike,
hung himslef.
or tv programes on child murderers,

I'm sure there will people world wide along with me muttering prayers/wishes he dont recover.

I am cringing as I read back this thread from last night and my typos, I am sorry I constantly refer to Brady as Brandy * blush* but in my defence I was very tired and as most of you know without a word doc and a good think my posts seldom make sense. :-D

Errol you are correct, there cant be and shouldnt be one rule for mothers and another men, nor by now should any crime a women committs shock the world as much as it would if a man had committed it.

Over the years I have also shouted with regards BRADY and Hindley "they should of hung" but no I am not in favour of hanging and glad it will never return, I am glad that 50yrs ago they missed being hung by a matter of months, Hindley spent her life trying to be freed she had no hope or future and even if she was ever freed she certainly would of had no life and Brady has basicaly rotted to dealth over the past 10 yrs begging to die, and that is how he spends his last days both have lived in fear whilst in prison and even then never lived as other lifers have, so I can not see where living the life of luxury comes in to it, no one cant change the past and bring back those poor children.

I believe that you cannot have one rule for a mother and another for a bloke or someone else - she was in a position of trust with those children so surely the crime is even more heinous.
I am actually totally against the death penalty - for some of the reasons discussed earlier - but I do firmly believe in rehabilitation, re-education and reintegration within society

No Errol I don't think Lianne Smith should be hanged as I think she'll be living a nightmare for the rest of her days.

I am still shocked to read of horrific murders,and more by the day it seems to me, but no reporting in the media could ever desensitise me about evil crimes...

I remember well the Ruth Ellis case - been to the pub where the bullet hole is in the wall - Hampstead - she should never have been hanged - well having said that, no one should be hanged, it's barbaric, but life should mean life - never walk the streets again - these days life seems to be about 12 years or less

too many mistakes were made in convicting people years ago - proaably today to, though we do have the benefit of DNA now

I can never get Timothy Evans out of my mind - he was Welsh, spose that's why - poor boy was semi-literate and hanged for the crimes committed by Reginald Christie who was eventually hanged himslf - a posthumous pardon is not much good now is it
