Rambling Report 5 Sep 2019 16:10

They are just the schedule numbers, not relevant in any way to you :-)

To start you off this is the 1911 for birth locations of Geoorge and Alice Fanny , you should be able to work back from them.

1911 Census For England & Wales
Bowbridge Stroud Gloucestershire, Stroud, Gloucestershire, England

I have just gone on freebmd to have a go and it gives me the childs name and where they were registered but doesn't say mothers maiden name. What am I doing wrong please?

Rambling

Rambling Report 5 Sep 2019 16:11

Jayne you should be seeing it laid out like this on GRO . Maddox is the mother's maiden name

MIDDLEDITCH, ALICE FANNY ........ MADDOX
GRO Reference: 1865 S Quarter in ST ASAPH Volume 11B Page 391

On freebmd you will not see mother's name

Births Sep 1865 (>99%)
Middleditch Alice Fanny St. Asaph 11b 391

Just going back give me a minute.

Jayne

Jayne Report 5 Sep 2019 16:19

omw I am so thick. On freebmd I have clicked births then typed in Harold Jacques and the dates/years. It then takes me to a page with a list of these names with registration district and number but doesn't show me mothers maiden name :-(

RolloTheRed

RolloTheRed Report 5 Sep 2019 16:19

Although they don't say so FreeBMD will have a stab at the maiden name of a partner / parent pre 1911 if you make a relevant query.
The GRO service also will give you marriage / mother maiden names pre 1911 by using their index service. It is free once you have registered for an account (also free).
The 1911 Census records usually have marriage date ( if any ) and a useful tall of the number of children born/died/survived.
The BMD service on Ancestry is more complete than FreeBMD. FreeBMD often cannot find records where the search terms are even a little bit off whereas @y is much more flexible.

Island Report 5 Sep 2019 16:25

Jayne, why didn't you just ask someone to do your friends tree for you?

Just put the names up, 'helpers' don't get much to look up on here these days :-)

Jayne Report 5 Sep 2019 16:32

Jayne Report 5 Sep 2019 16:34

Can I just ask those that have access to the 1939 register does it show you the original document and is it like the census or does it just give you the transcribed details. Thinking of maybe signing up for it but as its so expensive thought I would as first x

You might struggle a bit with with finding Alice, she is a servant on the 1881 and 1891 census before her marriage, and is not with her parents in 1871 either, but these are her parents in 1871 confirmed by son, note Madox and Madocks are often used

1871 England, Wales & Scotland Census
Springfield Road, Painswick, Stroud, Gloucestershire, England

James Middleditch Head - Male 32 1839 - Gloucestershire, England
Mary A Middleditch Wife - Female 25 1846 - Herefordshire, England
George Middleditch Son - Male 4 1867 - Denbighshire, Wales
William J Middleditch Son - Male 3 1868 - Gloucestershire, England
Ann Middleditch Daughter - Female 2 1869 - Gloucestershire, England

MIDDLEDITCH, GEORGE MADOCKS
GRO Reference: 1866 D Quarter in ST ASAPH Volume 11B Page 365

Alice is mistranscribed but is with her grandparents in 1871

1871 England, Wales & Scotland Census
Fern Hill, Weobley, Herefordshire, England

John Maddox Head - Male 67 1804 - Worcestershire, England
Margaret Maddox Wife - Female 66 1805 - Shropshire, England
Alie Middleditch Grandchild - Female 5 1866 - Denbighshire, Wales <<<<<<
Betsy Day Servant - Female 14 1857 - Herefordshire, England

Re the 1939 register the image is shown, but it may not give more than the transcription , except that you will see some updates, for eg if a name changes, on marriage for example. The 1939 was used up to 1991 by the NHS so married names of women will have been added, and usually the date when the name changed is also written in.

On Findmypast the 1939 register does have the original images as well as transcriptions.

Jayne, yes, it is very addictive. Look out for free trials on Find My Past and Ancestry - 'Mr Magoo' usually kindly alerts us to them on these forums. Alternately, I think you can get free access to either at local libraries.

or.... if you opt for a short, paid membership on FMP or Ancestry have a list of what you want to look for to hand to save wasting your sub.

Ancestry & FMP are often available free at your local library. You may have to book computer time in advance.
