Island ......................

Trump and his lawyers might possibly try that, I don't put it past him!

But he is only a president, he does not control anything like the date of the election as does a Prime Minister. He is governed by the Constitution of the United States.

I think the rule in the UK, Canada and elsewhere says that a General Election should be held within 5 years of the date of the previous election. In practice, Canada and several other countries have gone to a set date that falls within a 4 year cycle. But the PM can set any date s/he likes during that period ...... all anyone knows until s/he announces it is that it must be held by (eg) October 15 every 4 years.

The US President does not have that power.

The Constitution says “The Congress may determine the Time of choosing the Electors, and the Day on which they shall give their Votes; which Day shall be the same throughout the United States.”

That is an unambiguous statement that Congress, and not a potentially self-interested president, gets to decide when the leader of the United States shall be chosen.

Congress has exercised the authority that the Constitution gives it. They enacted a law in 1948 that says: "The electors of President and Vice President shall be appointed, in each State, on the Tuesday next after the first Monday in November, in every fourth year succeeding every election of a President and Vice President."

That is actually the date of the popular vote which determines the number of members appointed to the Electoral College.

BTW ........ Congress is currently controlled by the Democrats ;-) :-D :-D

Two voices of clarity that I admire at the moment:

Jacinta Ardern (New Zealand); and

Andrew Cuomo (New York).

The latter remained cool, calm and collected while he blew Trump out of the water.

Just love it. :-D

If Trump insists on opening up America will other countries refuse to allow Americans to enter as they may be bringing the virus with them?

For Trump money appears to be the most important thing in his life.

The priority for Jacinda seems to be NZ's citizens. She is carrying her office with aplomb and a clarity of vision. 20% pay cut for her, her ministers and the top civil servants is a master-stroke.

Trump seems to have limited knowledge of his country's federal and state laws unless it's his speech writer who ought to be sacked if it is. I am sick of Trump's bumbling and making things up as he goes along.

He seems to get worse every time I watch hiim and I'm sure he thinks he's The Trump Entertainment Show. I switch off or over after his first few words cos I am beginning to wonder whether something is missing in his make-up (not literally, you understand).

JoyL ................

Trump makes sense when you realise that he came from the business world, in particular a peculiarly American world where the big wig owner is "God", and hs full control, not only over his employees from the top to the very lowest, but also over other companies. If he wants to take over or buy another company, that type of owner bullies, exaggerates, lies, etc.

He rides rough shod over everybody, firing those who are not yes men.

He pays no attention to money, but knows how to get out of bankruptcy, how to avoid paying income taxes, and has excellent lawyers, especially ones who are willing to veer very close to the line between honesty and criminality.

Just look at the lawyer who went to jail, admitting that he had lied for Trump.

Look at the "personal lawyer" he now has, Rudy Giuliani.

Doesn't it all look familiar??

Joy ..........

some more calm voices of clarity ................ all from Canada.

First, our PM who keeps away from being "The person" to make all announcements, trusting his ministers and officials to be capable and able.

Instead, he holds a "message for all Canadians" followed by answering questions from media, lasting about 20 minutes beginning at about 11:15 am Ottawa time. He will talk about upcoming announcements, adding "details to be released very soon" ............ that's often within hours, and presented by two of his Cabinet ministers.

Our Premier of BC John Horgan is following the same line, except he is only appearing about once a week to give a statement and occasionally answer questions.

Both have said that their job is behind the scenes, making sure supplies are obtained, talking to other G7 leaders (Trudeau) or other Premiers (Horgan), and generally doing the other necessary work.

Second, BC's Health Official Dr Bonnie Henry ............... the person par excellence. There are online pages following her, Tshirts with her photo on it, admiring her John Fluevog shoes (!!!). She is wonderfully calm, clear and truthful. She is always accompanied by the province's Minister of Health, who stands to one side supporting her. She gives updates, issues orders, and occasionally lays down the law, 6 days a week (not Sunday). She even shed a tear one day.

Third, the Federal Public Health Official, Dr Theresa Tam, who always appears alone, and gives Canada-wide updates, orders etc. There is also a T-shirt with her picture on it!

Both officials are fully trained doctors and specialists in epidemics and pandemics.

My vote is always for Dr Henry.

Of course, not all the Premiers in Canada hold back from being "the voice and face", and some are better than others.

If people follow the Trump's advice the daily death's from Covid 19 will come down.

They will all be dying a horrible and painful death from bleach or disinfectant in the body.
