When we lived in Malta, as a toddler, I used to eat the 'prickly pears' that grew on cacti.
I would pick and peel them myself - I soon learned how to do it without pricking myself :-D

Maggie, when we lived in Leonora, north of Kalgoorlie our son was friends with an Aboriginal boy who was in the same class at primary school.

One Saturday or Sunday he went 'bush' with the lad's family and apparently took a very gluttonous liking to prickly pears.

Judging by the amount he vomited back up a few hours later I would say that he had devoured almost an acres worth :-D :-D

Fortunately the resultant mess was easily cleaned up and had no offensive smell.

I had prickly pear fruit in Norwich. There's exotic.

I can remember throwing up, having been pigging elderberries and my mother thought I might have had a stomach haemorrhage.

I wasn't too ken on elderberries - but my gran made a lovely wine with them.

Don't think I had enjoyed them but it was something to do.

Interesting to see that many of us were in tune with the seasons and what we could find available to eat.
This wasn't so much a need for food, rather an awareness of what was free to eat.

I came from a family, where the garden had to provide food for us. I wonder if recent food shortages will create more back yard gardeners.
