The first episode of a life-affirming drama series written by Sir Lenny Henry and inspired by his mother's stories about leaving Jamaica in the 1950s for Britain. Leah and her sister Chantrelle are on a mission escorting their friend Hosanna from Jamaica to Britain to potentially marry their brother Aston - Leah hopes to find work quickly in Aston's hometown of Dudley while Chantrelle has accepted a job as a live-in nanny near London and is expected to start promptly when she reaches England. Pious Hosanna is initially hesitant to leave her homeland, but she is convinced by Aston's handsome photo and Leah's promise to chaperone her back if things don't work out - however, everything immediately falls into disarray upon their arrival as the so-called mother country is nothing like the dream they were sold and their dingy overnight abode in London is overrun by a wild party - the calamity of the night's events ends with Hosanna being arrested, but Leah is determined not to fail. |
