Gwyn, mine was a mixed grammar. It was probably why we were taught the dances I mentioned because there was no holding in a clinch as you have to for the waltz. The barn dance was the nearest we came to that but as it was progressive your time with someone who you fancied was very short and sweet. :-D

Gwyn, most of our teachers were nuns! :-0

When building work was going on, naturally some girls were a bit giggly when a young builder looked their way. A particularly grumpy nun barked "what makes you think you're so handsome that a man would look at you? :-0

no-one was brave enough to say 'well he weren't looking at you duck' LOL
If only :-D

I'm not sure that they had, Island!

Part of the trouble was that both schools had managed with half of the pupils taking the male / female role and when the classes merged, many pupils struggled to play the opposite role :-|

Not sure that the arrangement lasted very long.

With a friend,I was once severely reprimanded by a senior mistress for speaking to a boy over the school fence, at lunch time.
When she was told that we knew him from a church youth club, she was just a little less shocked, but said we were showing a poor example to girls from the lower school. :-0
Most of our teachers were Miss.!

Afternoon all :-) <3

No Joy, we didn't do any dancing at school and when I went to the local dance hall in my teens it was mostly The Twist and The Maddison. Haven't heard of the dances you mention but then I was never really into dancing. We only went to the dance hall because it was somewhere to meet boys ;-)

Had the grammar boys progressed enough?

Afternoon all :-) <3

Good to see you back Maddie.
Sounds a nasty virus or whatever that found you :-0

Chilly wind and lots of cloud, so the times we have seen the sun today have not been very warming.

We had ballroom dancing in our all girls' school in the 6th form.
When they decided we had progressed enough, the 6th year from the boys'
grammar school in town came to join us :-0

OH hadn't learned formal dancing, but was quite happy to make an attempt at it, when we used to go to functions at his workplace.
We got by :-)

Umm... have to say no there Joy, no dances at my school and never heard of those you mention. No barns either :-S

I don't know about lads couldn't dance, more likely they wouldn't. They would crawl out of the bar for the last dance though, but never in the direction of my friend and I. Thank goodness for that, I learned quite recently that it was known as 'the stiffie dance' :-0

At uni I was pounced on by a 'cheese grater' for the last dance. Shuffling round with a sweaty bloke wearing a string vest under his nylon shirt was the last time I stayed until the end :-0

Morning Elizabeth <3 :-D Maddie <3 :-D and Island <3 :-D

Missed the last bus many times, Maddie. It was only when I was much older and married with family that Mum told me she never got to sleep until she heard me get home safely.

From the age of around 14 my school work suffered because I was out dancing so much but those teen years are something I thoroughly enjoyed and will remember with great fondness. Around 30 years later I was talking with an aunt and uncle and when the subject got around to our teenage years, they both said they were the best years of their lives - and I agree entirely with them, even now.

Most lads could not dance and simply eyed up the girls all night. When I got together with K, I was lucky because he could dance - at least rock and roll that his older sister taught him. Tried to get him to waltz and he had two left feet which I found hard to understand because he had rhythm.

I bet you all remember learning those typical school dances: Boston Two-step, Eva Three-step and a variety of other dances that I never did after leaving school - apart from the progressive barn dance because that was always played at the dance halls I went to.

Happy days and lovely memories to look back on. Somewhere I have a pic of me taken at one of the local halls.

Aftermorning all :-D :-D :-D

Windy and cold here with the occasional smile from the sun.

I loved Saturday nights dancing with my friend and our handbags.
Never had a boyfriend who'd dance so that sort of put paid to that.
Late partner wouldn't dance :-|
