I was sooooo anoyed today, I really had to bite my tongue. Went into our local Market and a woman was pushing a severly disabled man in a wheel chair. The man was making alot of noise and people were laughing at him. I went into the butchers and nearly walked out. The butcher and his female assistant thought they were being funny to the two unimpressed customers in front of me, saying 'its probably someone who has escaped from a lunatic asylum'. When the other two customers had gone, the female assistant looked at me and said ' what is it'. I seized my chance and told them both in no uncertain terms that it was a disabled man in a wheelchair. The female assistant had the nerve then to go 'AWW' I was so annoyed. I am not a religeous person but we should all count our blessings. Sorry for ranting. LL |

The most annoying thing was that they WERE adults. Kiddies maybe just looked when he did the loud noises, but not one did I see laugh. It was the adults. The ones that should have known better. LL |

LL I am disabled, had polio at age 3 and I walk with a limp, and yes children stare and even ask 'why does that lady walk funny ' parents usually drag them away feeling embarrassed, but if I get the chance I explain to them why, but for adults to act in this way as has been said is dispicable. I've just read your thread header again Avril, and have to say that I wouldn't be able to bite my tongue in the butchers (pardon the pun). I can honestly say that I'd say something in front of those other customers, just to make those 'assistants' uncomfortable. x Just off to bed now, in case anyone replies and I don't. :-) |

Thank you all for your support on this. I really don't feel I should be thanked though. It's just something I feel strongly about. These people are human, they have feelings, and so do their carers/ family etc. I also felt for the woman who was with him, as she looked distressed too and was trying to quieten the man down. I have a grandson, who has learning/ behavioural problems. He isn't as bad as the man I saw today, but, god help anyone who were ignorant enough to take the mick out of him if I were around. When I was younger I was a bit scared of speaking out. Now, I don't give a monkey's. I wanted to go to the woman and ask if she was ok, but as the man she was with didn't know me I was aware I could have made matters worse for her. I still aren't sure if I did right by not asking if she was ok, and still feel a bit guilty for that. LL |

My Dad is disabled and it is the adults that can be the most rude I remember once going on hoilday with my Mum and Dad - Dad was in his wheelchair and the airport staff took us all to the front of the checkin so they could then push Dad to through passport control A lady turned round and said really loud 'I've been stood here for nearly an hour waiting and they go straight to the front' I was furious and turned on her in front of everyone and said 'Aren't you lucky?, my Dad would love to be able to stand for an hour, be bloody grateful you have the use of your legs' She went bright red and a few people told me I did the right thing in embrassing her |

dont feel guilty. you did what you had to do and you had a gut feeling how to handle it . and i can guess that the carer was very aware of the situation you was in. i have had this happen to myself many times. xxxx linda |

Thank you Linda, and good for you Maddies Mate. As you said, your dad wasn't in a wheelchair for the fun of it. Why are people so rude to disabled people?....silly question, because some can't answer back, thats why. I would have also been tempted to say, 'He might be the first on, but, he will have to wait until all you able bodied people disembark, before he can be helped off'. LL |
