Dawnieher3headaches Report 18 Apr 2007 17:15

hubby had his car in for service today and to do stuff that it would fail mot on. We knew it needed two front tyres and was going to get them before the mot( Next month). Garage told hubby when he picked it up that one is about to burst and the other is illegal and told him NOT to take his family in the car till they were changed. First job of the day tomorrow so please check your tyres as we didnt think they were that bad, if in doubt go and ask a garage to check them.

Hi Dawn, that saddens me that your hubby has not enough knowledge to know if his car is roadworthy yet will put your and his kids lives at risk. Honestly that makes me very cross and he needs a kick up the rectum, big time. He ought not to be driving. Bob

Dawnieher3headaches Report 18 Apr 2007 17:34

Bob Its his work vehicle so we dont go in it often so he hasnt put us at risk. And the illegal one is because it has a bald spot so if it was parked with it to the road he wouldnt of seen it. We changed the rear ones not long ago as they were getting old and were told the front were fine guess we wont be going there for the new tyres if they couldnt spot the front ones would need changing as well

Bob the Busker

Bob the Busker Report 18 Apr 2007 17:39

Its not harsh I have no time for anyone who puts there families lives at risk. Have you ever sen a car blow a tyre at 40 mph. How many of you have the right car seats and make sure your kiddies are strapped in. The number I see with kiddies prancing about in the back, un strapped and mum or dad dashing about the minor roads at about 40 -50 mph makes my blood boil. Sorry if you think its harsh but go to your local A & E and see the effects. You might change your mind then

Deanna Report 18 Apr 2007 17:48

I am in complete agreement with you Bob.....BUT.....you know nothing about Dawn and her husband. They have a lovely little family and I'm sure he would not put their lives at risk. Had that been a habit, Dawn would not have been so shocked by the findings. Deanna X

McAnne's Gahan-Crazy Report 18 Apr 2007 17:53

Dawn It could happen to anyone hun Happened to me once - I went in for a new exhaust and asked them to check the tracking .......... turned out one of my front tyres was nearly through to the steel band inside and close to a blow out!! However - even if I HAD known what to look for I wouldn't have seen it as it was on the inside wall - i don't clamber around under the engine compartment so how could I have seen it?? And I don't have a man - knowledgable or otherwise to check mine over .....................

well it just make me cross . You ladies look after the family, and do it well.I expect the men to do the manly things for the family. Diy, Car maintenance, Gardening. Or have I been doing it wrong all these years

Well, I can see where Bob is coming from but I think we just have to be really glad the vehicle was checked before the mot test rather than waiting for the results of the mot, as we have just done, so I give thanks that we are not having a thread from Lynn telling us dreadful news of a tragic accident for Dawn's o.h. or all the family. Let's all make sure we get tyres checked occasionally, not just a quick glance at the areas we can see but maybe form a relationship (doesn't have to be that close lol) with a local garage or tyre fitter who will check the tyres periodically for us on the understanding that when and only when they are needed he will be honest with us and then get our custom. Glad you are all ok Dawn, and Bob, glad you are vigilant and look after your family. Keep spreading the word, it might not just be the driver of the faulty tyred vehicle that is killed or injured, it could be his whole family and another family in an 'innocent' vehicle involved in the accident when a tyre bursts and the vehicle goes out of control. Be safe everyone, and don't forget to strap everyone in properly, including the family dog, have seen too many of those leaping around in cars. Liz

Helen in Kent

Helen in Kent Report 18 Apr 2007 18:30

Hi Dawn, a few years back I drove to work and had to park in a different place to normal. When I left the building to go home I was looking at my car from a different side and to my horror could see that one tyre was down to the metal strands in one place - and I had been 2 hours on the M25 the previous day. I didn't even know tyres had metal in them. I couldn't believe it and crawled to the nearest tyre man who said this was nothing and showed me some appalling specimens he had changed. So trust no-one and look at all of your tyres regularly! I do now.

Bob the Busker

Bob the Busker Report 18 Apr 2007 19:38

I am afraid I am one of those people who when they see something wrong I try to do something about it. For instance a little while ago as I went to my car the car next door had paked with the wheels on nearly full lock. The inside of the tyre was worn extremely badly. This would be due to bad tracking, So I told the driver who happened to be a lady and she was very grateful , Because when the wheels were pointing straight ahead you could not see how bad the tyre was

Dawnieher3headaches Report 18 Apr 2007 19:44

but did you kick her upp the backside like you want to do to my hubby who by the way would not knowingly put any of us at risk and not only does all the men things you mentioned but also all the girl things because I cant.

Ron2 Report 18 Apr 2007 20:42

I agree with Bob. Illegal tyres are killers. How about if he'd had a blowout and hit another car etc etc Tis same with tyre pressures how many drivers check them or even know the correct pressures? Tyres and pressures, brake fluid, oil levels etc should be checked at least once a week. I also check mine prior any long journey as well. I enjoy fast driving but as safely as possible. For example tyre pressures can vary by several pounds twixt hot and cold weather. Such pressures and tyres are one of the first things an assessor checks when investigating crash damage and prior to giving the OK for repairs - I've watched them do it. Ron

Ron I know what you, Bob and others have said is right but I put up this thread to let people know how easy it is for it to happen and to remember to check their tyres NOT to have my hubby attacked like that from people that dont know him and Bob assumed we went in the car which we dont much.

Ron2

Ron2 Report 20 Apr 2007 22:17

Wasn't attacking your hubby just agreeing that bad to drive with such tyres as he knew they needed replacing but......... way you put it (prior to garage telling you they illegal) he was going to wait until MoT due yet he knew they wanted replacing. Hope it has been a warning to others and I admire you for putting the details in the thread. Ron

Yesterday I couldn't believe my eyes. There was a lady driving with a child sitting on her lap. A sudden stop and the kid would have been jelly squashed between her and the steering wheel !

Drove behind a woman in a 4 x 4 today, obviously picked up the child from an after school club nearby,a girl of about 6 leaping around in the back behind the mother's driving and front passenger seat. I had to pull alongside her as she was turning right and I left, and I stared at her, she looked at me so I mouthed, strap your child in, you stupid woman and she stuck her fingers up at me! Yet wouldn't she be the one expecting sympathy if the child went through the windscreen if an emergency stop or shunt from behind, happened. Some people are so ignorant. Liz

for goodness sake, has no one ever heard of the 50p test, if you haven't, then you should not be driving a car.... that is from a paramedic, that has had to pick up body parts from the roadside. bryan.

I can see where you are all coming from and agree with most of whats been said. However,If the vehicle had been properly serviced at the correct time the Wheels should have been 'Rotated' i/e back to front, front to back,to ensure evenwear on all tyres,If this has,nt been done, the servicing Garage Manager should recieve a swift kick where it hurts and you should find another Garage to service the Vehicle.thank God it was found before it blew. Also,if you get pulled by the Police,it costs a lot more than New Tyres.
