How could any doctor be held responsible for failure of contraception? The only 100% way of not getting pregnant is abstinence. Does this now mean that no doctor will ever recommend contraception for fear of being held responsible if it fails. Am I the only sane one in a mad world or the only mad one in a sane world. Jean x.

RB Think this is so silly that poor doctor he was only doing his job what if it was the manufacture of it that was wrong not his fault. Most people know that any form isnt 100% its a risk you have to take

Don't think ANY contraceptive is 100% - after having my now 21 year old son and 17 year old daughter, I and my husband decided our family was complete. I had used the coil inbetween pregnancies and carried on with this - until I found out I was pregnant, with the coil still in situ!!! I was offered a termination on numerous occasions as they said the coil could have affected the foetus. I refused and they told me that taking the coil out (I was only 5 weeks pregnant) could cause a miscarriage, but that leaving it in could cause a miscarriage around 20 weeks! You can imagine my dilemna. I decided to have the coil taken out immediately. Then at 14 weeks pregnant when I had come to terms with the fact that we were going to have a new addition, I started bleeding heavily. It's strange how guilty I felt, I felt as though the baby knew he hadn't been planned. I went on to have a 37 week pregnancy and delivered a beautiful 7lb 15oz rosy cheeked beauty. Just as I was due home my baby was taken to Special Care where he was found to have a low blood sugar and a hole in his heart. Still thought I was being punished for not planning him. After 8 months, the hole in his heart had closed, and he is now a robust 10 year old who is a star footballer and never stays still. I can't imagine life without him and his big brother and sister dote on him. I know for some, contraception failure is a nightmare, but in my instance, it was one of the best things to happen to us. My thoughts go out to anybody finding themselves unexpectedly pregnant. Best wishes Carol

Dawn, This topic has opened up a can of worms yet again.... There are a reasons why the Pill or Patches might not have of worked, 1 was the lady in question on other medication at the same time, 2 illness can also, have ever slight can reduce the effect of the pill. It`s funny bcause we were only talking about the pill and patches and thier reliability the other day and now this has come up. R.B.

no contraception is 100% fool proof, most are 99% but have never seen one which si 100%. My youngest is here because contraception isn't 100%!!! We used contraception which failed. So bearing in mind i had two yr old twins and had was still suffering the after affects of major bad PND. I decided I couldn't bear to take a chance, so made OH take me to A & E on boxingday morning. And was given morning after pill... but as i said number 3 son is proof contraception isn't 100%. Now he's here wouldn't change him for the world... well most days I wouldn't change him LOL

Cyprus

Cyprus Report 17 Nov 2006 16:08

I just read this in the Cyprus Mail -got the impression that the contraceptive was by coil, but as well as the doctor having to pay contributions for the child for the next 16/18 years,he also has to pay contributions to the father of the child to help him pay maintenance costs! How is this child going to come to terms with being so unwanted?
