Don't know about places to stay that are cheap-look on the web you will find loads-I stayed at the Waldorf Astoria-not cheap but a lovely Art Deco Hotel steeped in History. Worth going to see-Empire state-you have to go in the day and at night. I have a book I can let you borrow it if you like- Guggenheim Natural History Museum Macey's Brooklyn Bridge Time Sq ok-too busy and touristy though Tons really-buy a metro card cheeper gets you there so quick. catherine xx

When we went last time we stayed in the Millenium Hilton, which is right next to ground zero - a bit eerie, but a nice hotel. God quite a good deal, booked through expedia - its a little cheaper because it's slightly off the beaten track to to speak. I'd agree with the places listed as worth a visit. Plus Grand Central Station, the statue of liberty, and central park. A trip on the Staten Island ferry is also good, and cheap/free !! Bloomingdales is an experience, but I prefer Macys, and Century21 is great for cheap shopping (its next door to the hotel we stayed in!) oh and if you can afford it when you're there, take a helicopter ride around Manhatten - stunning !

I flew American Airlines and stayed at The Wellington Hotel on 7th Ave, booked them seperately. Both booked online.

Yes! I went in October 2000, I stayed in a YMCA cos it was so cheap. :-p I dont think you'd want to slum it in there though huh? I went for a week, flew with BA, and in total it cost me £525

Hi I'm busy planning a trip to New York also. Told mum I'd take her away for a long weekend for her 65th birthday. Thought she'd pick some European City, anyway New York here we come. I've already bought the Lonely Planet Guide to New York it's quite comprehensive in its coverage. Enjoy your trip. T.O.R. ;~))

Hi BC, I always stay at the Salisbury Hotel, on W 57th, between 6th and 7th Avenue. It,s across the street from Carnegie Hall and within walking distance of Central Park, Rockerfeller Plaza, 5th Avenue, Broadway and of course, Times Square. Don,t forget to book a trip on the Circle line boat-trip....it takes you all around Manhatten and makes for a good photo shoot.

Make sure you read all the Graffiti from inside the Statue of Liberty. It's quite interesting. :-)

only just been this October. Fantastic. Stayed at Novotel Hotel right on Times Square. We booked for The Producers and Phantom of the Opera on Broadway a few months before we went. If you book early enough for the shows you can choose good seats. Pack only essentials, you'll need the extra room in your case for all the goodies you buy. Had to buy extra case coming home. Marie
