I've got several generations of Francis on one line plus a lot of Edwards on another. I also have a line of Jonathans. William and Thomas turn up a lot but it isn't as bad as my husband who has 18 men on his tree called William Gill. Sorting that lot out was a nightmare. His grandfather had done a lot of that bit of the tree using parish records about 50 years ago but we found a small muddle in one spot when we put it all on computer. That made it clearer that a couple of the Williams had been confused. That's without adding a lot of the more recent lines downwards and the name is still being used in the family. Elizabeth is popular on all the lines we have. I have several Janes too. My short run of Ralphs did help sort out one line and I've got useful groups of Isaac and Jeremiah. Sue |

Also have loads of Henrys and Harolds.....all named after ggg(?) grandmother Harriet. Biggest headache, and I love him, is my gg Grandfather who disappeared into a black hole between 1871 and 1901 when he reappeared with a wife and four children. (Bet he was with the socks. LOL. Can not even find when he died!!. Libby xx |

I've got my fair share of William's, Thomas' etc, but i have nearly 20 Ralph's I also have Surtees (as a Christian name) about 10 times and Anthony about the same - I didn't think that it was popular in the 1700's |

Why did they name the boys after the father and the brothers of each family also used the same forenames. Roberts 6 Henry 10 Thomas 11 John 11 George 12 William 15 Ann 8 Mary 14 My favourite though is Treleven and there is only one of him! All these are on my paternal line. They drive me mad but I love them all. Beryl x |

Yes, the name that goes on and on and on, on dads side is Thomas! going back to the 1600's its Thomas, and my gggrandfather was called Thomas who called one of his sons Thomas and thank god my ggrandfather was called Anthony and luckily he called none of his sons Thomas, Hurrah end of line. Down my father's side Cyril Ex husband's side Ivan My eldest son thanks me almost daily I didn't follow tradition on either side :) And I was also kind enough to not give him either as a second name. BUT.....If I had been heavily into tracing my family history, way back then, I may have been sorely tempted :)))) lol Chris |
