Hi Paul just found this and know exactly what you are going through making that final decision is the hardest thing in the world, but you will know when the time is right and make it. As my vet said to me you know your dog you know if they unhappy. I had to make this decision earlier this year and felt terrible but knew my poor Elsa had had enough. Thinking of you all Germaine x

When we as humans grieve, whether it be for a relative, friends, beloved animal, whoever - we are feeling that grief and sadness for our own loss. If the person or animal is really unwell/seriously ill, they are the ones who are happy because they have been released from their suffering. Thoughts with you Paul Sylvxx

HI Paul, sorry to hear that your dog isn't very well. i lost my dog back in 2001 she was a lab X it was the worst day of my life , because i wasn't with her the vet had taken her to look her over and told me to come back later in the day , then i got a phone call to say that she had died. hazelx

Despite the sad circumstances we've all posted here, I must comment on how heartening it is that there are so many caring pet owners around. I know there's only a few on this thread, but you know what I mean, lol. (((HUGS))) to all of you. x

I know exactly what you`re going through, having been a lifelong dog owner. My Sam went just over a year ago, hhaving fought diabetes for 6 years. He was blind for the last 2 yrs of his life, tho` he managed brilliantly. He was 12 1/2 when he went, his body just couldn`t take any more. I always promised him I`d be with him, and I`m so glad he went in my arms. It broke my heart, but I `m grateful for so many happy years. We owe it to them to do what`s right. thinking of you.

Doesn't matter, cat, dog, hamster, budgie, rabbit.... we grow so fond of them all Glenys. Had to do it myself to my cats....

I wish I could take the credit for it, Sylvia, but sadly not. It's a beautiful poem that I've put up many times in such circumstances; it really helped hubby and I in 1997 when we had to put our beloved cat Tiger to sleep. I know it's written with dogs in mind, but what the heck! :-) x

Just seen your Pets Prayer Glenys - really lovely, feel quite tearful now....

He's a bit perkier this afternoon. He had his cortozone injection this morning, and I think it's just kicked in, he's being a little sod, and waiting underneath the kitchen table for anything which might drop on the floor. hehe!

Paul, I am so sad to hear that your dog is poorly. Dogs are always happy to see you, they are such a joy to have around and they love you unconditionally. I have had two dogs and both have had to be put to sleep which was heartbreaking. I hope when the time comes your dog is taken peacefully and my thoughts are with you.

Sorry to hear about your dog. I hope as you say, he doesn't suffer.

Our vets said about our cat, when he was terminally ill, that when his quality of life had gone, that's the time to call it a day. It breaks our hearts I know, but the pet must come first. personally I think when they start to have accidents in their sleep or around the house its time to let go. They look so pitiful as they dont know whether they will be told of for doing something they have no control over. My last dog went completely deaf and frail but when he started messing then I realised i had to take him to the vets for the last time. He couldnt have his usual walk anymore as he was deaf I couldnt let him of his lead cos if he couldnt see me he would panic and burst into a trot so I would have to chase after him. He then became a danger to himself as he got near the road one day before I reached him.

Paul-I know it's hard chuck,but do what is best for the animal---they must come first.

Paul,So sorry to hear about your poor old dog.Mine was 12 when i had to have her put down.She kept messing in her sleep.Even in the day time she had no control.When we took her to the vets and she was examined he said the nerves were going in her spine.Sometimes my hubby would have to pick her up as she couldn't get up.Feel very sad for you and your best mate.
