Thanks for posting Maz. This is something that worries me about my mum She is 79 and lives on her own with no visitors. Difficult for me to get to due to lack of transport and the public transport htere and back takes literally all day so with work shifts etc. I cant visit very often. Last year she was very ill but couldnt get a doctor appointment or a home visit. Finally she spoke to a doctor on the phone but I am sure she never told him all what was wrong and he just told her it was a bug so drink plenty of fluids to flush it through. Well she couldnt get out of the house so hope she had enough drinks in. I usually make her up a hampe for the christmas period. But it is still very worrying. Hope your mum is felling better next time you visit.

Thanks to everyone who has added. Unfortunately the latest news is not so good. The doctors are now thinking that she DID have a stroke and she should be having a CT scan this evening to confirm/eliminate this. I will know more when my sister calls me - she is going there tonight. I will keep you posted. Maz. XX

I hope your mum soon gets better. I work in a nursing home and find confusion is quite common with infection though the culprit is usually a urine infection rather than a chest infection. A good doctor should screen for infection if someone becomes confused. For a urine infection the urine usually becomes cloudy and smelly. Very frightening at the time if you are not used to it. Anne

Hope your Mum is recovering well Yes Maz it's quite common in the elderly to develope confusion because of any infection

Thanks for that Maz, certain things make sense now. My OH's brother, who had a debilitating condition anyway, and often had fits which resulted in coma which sometimes took up to three weeks to come fully out of, also had these periods of 'dementia' where he would not recognise anyone or know what day it was. It was very frightening at time, as he would often see 'people in white coming to take him' while he was in hospital. This was usually put down to a urinary infection, but it never made sense to us. I suppose that is what used to be termed Delerium. Sadly Adrian passed away in January of this year, aged 42, following a major seizure from which he never regained consciousness. I guess the 'people in white' finally took him.
