Wouldn't a mental Hospital be a Sanatorium? A Penetentiary is a Prison in my vocab. XXX Sioux

A place for penal servitude hence the name [an american correctional institution] a very strict prison, rock breaking and all that.the best known one being alcatraz ,Fred.

Sue is correct. It is an americanism which has got into this country through gangster films of the 1930's. Their gaols are known as penitentiarys. Nothing to do with mental institutions whatever. Rupert

Further investigation shows it (In 1861) to be a Penitentiary Hospital.
