I know its a sensitive issue for some on the board including me, But my OH asked me in a letter ' what do the British public really think of us being here and in Afghanistan?' I said I'd ask on here, This isnt a thread to cause any problems but to find out true feelings as our lads and lasses dont get the true view, Thanks, caz xxxxxxxxxx |

Hi Caz, I went on several marches to try and stop them going into Iraq, so you can guess how I feel. The problem is that now we are there we can't just leave until we've sorted out the mess we helped to create. Gwynne |

They went and did a fine job in Iraq by liberating them of an evil man and should have been home with us long ago.BUT, Afghan and Iraq, my personal view, they shoudlnt have been sent anyway! They have my full respect our troops. x |

My Closest friend has 2 sons out there,I know she wants them home, its time they came home. They did what was needed to be done. I have seen recently on the news that the Taliban are just waiting now to go back in, I really dont think much has been achieved if this happens:-(( |

This is difficult, Caz. In an ideal world, I think we (as in UK) should mind our own business, but it's far from being an ideal world. In the Falklands war (ok so I remember it!!) I know of at least one local lad who was killed by 'friendly fire' - that concerns me in this current conflict. It also seems that the 'enemy' are many and in many guises. Afghanistan - well, the Taliban got it's 'support' originally because they promised to stop the drugs/growers and traffickers. I wish 'we' had never been involved, but we are now so I suppose I would advocate some sort of Damage Limitation. All the military forces at least have the knowledge that they did enlist - it wasn't compulsory - but the wives didn't enlist and they (and the parents and children of servicemen) are a different issue entirely. All the best Caz - it's living on a knife-edge. |

No, I don't think they should be out there and I don't think I would be able to cope with a loved out being out there. Thank God people do join up but it's not something I could do, and all respect to them. Lorrainex |

Yes, you will find a difference. It's so different when you live around the camp. My b-i-l was in the Royal Artillery so when he was away my sister was surrounded with other wives and girlfriends and always had company and 'do's' to attend. Can't be easy for you. Lorrainex |

' Our lads don't get the true view' (??) Well, maybe that is a good thing, for whether we are for or against their NEED to be in Iraq or Afghanistan they have a job to do and should do it to the best of their ability. If they know exactly what we are all feeling then that could lead to them being despondent thus putting themselves more at risk. Caz, if they have radio/television then I am surprised that they do not know the mood of the country - unless it is monitored as any letter that you send may be. I can only wish them the best of everything whilst they have to be there, as I am sure we all do, and hope that it will not be too long before they are all home again. I shouild also add that I am surprised that your OH didn't perceive the mood of the country whilst he was back here recently. |
